3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better... October 27, 2005
By Captain
Microsoft Works Suite 2006 does not impress me very much. Microsoft has not evolved fast enough in my opinion when it comes to word processing and most programs associated with Microsoft Office and/or Microsoft Works. At around $99.00, the price is attractive, but you really get nothing more than in past editions of the same product. The features have stayed the same, the programs themselves have stayed the same for the most part, and easiness-to-use still could be worked on.

I truly believe that anyone who currently has at least Microsoft Office or Word 2000 edition, should keep using it and save some money. You get nothing more in the newer editions including this newly released 2006 edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great September 11, 2006
When I got a new computer at the end of 2001, the 2002 edition was installed on my computer by Gateway. Although I never used Streets and Trips (and barely used Encarta), I used Word and Picture It! quite heavily.

Well, my hard drive died a few weeks ago, and I had to get a new computer. I bought Microsoft Works Suite 2006 to go with it.

I was a bit apprehensive because Picture It! was replaced with Microsoft Digital Image Standard 2006 Editor. It took me a while to get fluent in Picture It!, and the idea of learning a new photo system was daunting. (I write mostly for the web, and use pictures to accompany my reviews and articles--as well as for eBooks.)

I haven't done any extensive work with it yet, but it appears easy to use IF you have experience with Picture It! If you've never used any image program before, it may be a bit confusing. (I feel that Picture It! was more self-explanatory.)

However, for all that the Works Suite gives you, I feel it's a good buy. Word 2002 has advantages over the older version (for example, you can easily insert images), and Encarta may be helpful for kids doing homework (or curious adults wanting to learn more about something).

Updating Encarta is easy as clicking a mouse: just open up the program and click "Update Encarta". New articles and updates will automatically be added to your computer.

Although I *still* don't use Streets and Trips (I go to MapQuest reflexively), I still think this is a great Suite for a great price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't really work well with Excel March 14, 2006
I bought this so I'd be able to open Excel documents that I receive in email, as well as for Word. While I'm reasonably pleased with the Word functionality, potential buyers should know that the spreadsheet program is NOT Excel or even Excel lite, and is not fully compatible with .xls documents. I find this very irritating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatly improved product May 5, 2008

I bought this as an improvement over Microsoft (MS) Works Suite 2002. It works much much better and much more efficiently with a much improved and nearly seamless user interface. I am very glad that I found this great and useful bargain which includes MS Word, MS Money, MS Streets and Trips (travel planning), MS Encarta Encyclopedia, MS Digital Image (photo editing and organizing), as well as Microsoft Works itself with a calendar, to do interface, etc. I highly recommend it as a very useful organizational tool with many useful separate individual elements to boot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Product Key doesn't work. March 12, 2007
Verified Purchase
I had the same problem with Works Suite 2002 that I had with 2006. The product key that came with the discs would not install Microsoft Word; the message "invalid product key" came up. After a computer problem, I reformatted the drive and did a reinstall from the original Works 2002 discs. The invalid key message showed up when I tried to install Word 2002. After arguing with Microsoft people for three weeks I bought the new Works Suite 2006. After running all the discs to a clean hard drive, everything worked except, again, the invalid key message came up and wouldn't activate Word. Highly irritating. I got it going by to Microsoft Works, Programs, clicked Word Document, got an "activate product" and got Word installed and running. This seems to be a dumb glitch in the software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for home use August 26, 2006

I use MS Office at work, and at home, but for my daughter's computer this was perfect.

Most people don't need the full version of office, and this package has so much for so little money.

The full version of Word is reason enough to spend this amount of money. Note: This is not the latest version, but who cares.

I would say this is one of the best software deals out there. Unless you need 100% office compatiblity, this is the package for you. If you do, buy the student and teacher version of MS Office. Read the fine print, it is for anyone not using it for business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wicrosoft Works Suite 2006 November 4, 2006
I have been a Word Perfect user for years, but found I could not open files that were received from professional organizations and Attorneys. That was the reason for purchasing Microsoft Works. This has been a great asset for our business. Thank you

5.0 out of 5 stars Word 2002 May 3, 2013

I got this suite because it includes Word 2002, which is my personal favorite version of that software and is still in general use. I've tried the freeware and shareware available and I like them, but to avoid copyright infringement those suites have small but noticeable formatting differences that don't work for me. To create documents with the formatting I want it's gotta be Word. You shall pry the pre-ribbon Word from my cold dead hands, Microsoft! *ahem* Anyway, I successfully installed the whole suite on a machine running Vista. Another reviewer is absolutely correct in that you want to get a suite that includes 5 disks in the box with the Product Key. Avoid getting OEM (if the seller is advertising one with a computer brand name on the box, that is probably an OEM and it won't work on any computer except the one it was sold for originally). In order to get the suite to run on my Vista, I first had to get rid of the expired trial version of Office that was lingering on the machine. The suite setup wizard will automatically detect whether or not you have Office already on the computer and refuse to install Word if it finds anything. After that, installation went fine. I then had to put XP Service Pack 3 on the machine, and it downloaded and installed with no problem. Sure it takes up some hard drive space, but I got rid of some space by removing Office so it evened out. You only have to enter the Product Key for activation of one program in the suite and it will be recognized by the other programs. The internet-based integration feature for Money is expired, but I didn't get the suite for that program so it's no inconvenience to me. I feel like I got a bargain for the version of Word that I prefer, and I am pleasantly surprised to also have a bug-free version of Works that exceeds the version that it replaced on this computer in both features and usability.
