1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, April 12, 2003
By A Customer
This seemed to be a very attractive model, especially when compared with HP products. The unit itself is impressive for personal (non-business) needs.

After installing the software on a laptop running XP per Microtek's instructions, scanned files did not open. Using the Microtek.com tech support site, I e-mailed the company for a solution. Within 24 hours I had received a reply with detailed instructions to rectify the Scan Wizard 5 bugs. These instructions did not remedy the problem. A second e-mail was forwarded to Microtek asking for further assistance.

The reply: I needed to call (not toll-free) and to speak with a "consultant" regarding this "complicated issue". For the priviledge of correcting the bugs in Microtek's software, I would be charged [money] for up to 30 minutes plus [money]/minute thereafter. This ... response to milk me for a product I had less than a week caused me to come up with a solution to the tech issues: return the scanner for a full refund.

Recommendaton: Avoid Microtek at all costs. The company is interested in your money only. Canon, Epson and Visioneer are three nice alternatives.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart!, February 17, 2003
By A Customer
I bought this scanner after researching several models - primarily Microtek and HP. It seemed to have all the features I wanted, was reasonably priced, received great reviews, and had a one year warranty. That's as good as it got. The scanner may have produced good results but I was so lost in the program I was too frustrated to appreciate it. I'm an experienced computer user but I found Microtek's program extremely confusing and difficult to navigate. Not having quantities of spare time (or desire)to devote to learning it I returned it and purchased the HP 3570c the very next day. A HUGE improvement!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars not too shabby, January 10, 2003
By A Customer
I had specific needs: (1) a cheap scanner, that (2) did good scans, and (3)gave me custom control. I tried two major brands and found their scanning software lacking; I couldn't keep them from defaulting to the simple idiot-scan or automatically cropping and "fixing" the orientation of my scan materials (note to HP and Epson: those are nice features for some people, but please allow us to turn them off). The Microtek scanner has everything I was looking for, and so far has not let me down. The only downsides I can find are a slightly flimsy lid, a minor crash while i installed it on XP, and for some inexplicable reason it scans upside-down (which I got used to). If you want a scanner that gives you complete control, get this one and use it in expert mode.
