Like most scanners, the V6UPL's software was easy to install. From the start of setup, we especially liked the zip-lock bags handily labeled either EPP or USB, and the separate installation and reference guides for both Windows and Mac. (You can connect via either a USB or SCSI port on PC or Macintosh.) We highly recommend following the enclosed and very logical reference guide for the fastest, most trouble-free installation. Our total installation time was about 15 minutes.
Scan settings are managed by an intuitively designed software package that allows you to adjust your scans for speed, output size, and color accuracy. The results of our scans were very good, with the exception of those created using the transparency adapter; its performance was inferior to adapters in a comparable category.
The software package includes Adobe Photoshop Deluxe and ScanWizard 5, a new version of Microtek's award-winning scanner controller software, so you can reliably produce images from photos or enlarge them from postage-stamp size to full-page size without losing detail. The software's automatic color calibration also provides true-to-life color reproduction. And its simple and straightforward approach to navigating through your scanning tasks makes editing and enhancing images elementary. OCR (optical character recognition) software further assists in reading scanned texts. You can also scan positive 35mm slides using the included slide adapter and then, with one mouse click, deliver your edited scanned image to e-mail or a printer. --David Greenberger

Good scanner for the price,

This review is from: Microtek ScanMaker V6UPL Flatbed Scanner (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
The Microtek Scanmaker V6upl is a good scanner at a decent price. It scans photos with good color and detail. The PhotoImact software (included) is excellent software for making adjustments to the photos. Forget the Adoble Photo Deluxe 2 (also included). OCR is above average using Textbridge 9, but not worth much (typical) using the included limited OCR software. The drawbacks are it takes up a lot of deskspace (but can can scan 8 1/2 x 14 documents), and the included transparency adapter gives very poor results on slides for which it is intended. Overall, a good scanner, well worth the current price, especially if you will scan some documents longer than 11 inches.

poor support for Windows XP Professional,

This review is from: Microtek ScanMaker V6UPL Flatbed Scanner (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
Microtek's web site claims that this will work with Windows XP. I had to e-mail their sales staff to ask a technical support question ("how do you get this to work?") and they just said "it will work with USB". Wrong. I've removed and reinstalled the driver that "works with Windows XP" many times. They need to update their drivers for Windows XP. If you install the drivers as administrator, only administrators (not regular users) can scan images. If more than one user is logged in, the scanner programs will hang. A lot of trial and error and unplugging/plugging USB cables to get this to work. The only positive thing I can say is that on occasions in the past when I have been able to configure it successfully, the scan quality was good.

V6upl,

This review is from: Microtek ScanMaker V6UPL Flatbed Scanner (PC/Mac) (Office Product)
We just purchased and returned two other scanners, one by mustek and one by umax. The first thing I noticed about this scanner is it's weight - it is well made and not flimsy like so many scanners you see. It doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles but the scan quality is great and scanwizard twain interface is nicely done. It is a little bit picky in winME, but otherwise was an easy install. The Software bundled is nice.
