An American Original: Tui St. George Tucker goes her own way, September 25, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Microtonal Chamber Music (Audio CD)
Tui St. George Tucker's recent collection of microtonal works is a treat for contemporary music lovers interested in the American maverick tradition. Each of the works, and this is a collection rich in variety, are built from their own new molds. But at the same time, they each pay homage to the musical traditions of the past. From medieval polyphony to impressionism, from Bach to bebop: Tucker is a fearless transformer of styles and cultures. Especially notable is her own virtuoso rendition of the SECOND SONATA FOR SOLO RECORDER. This ground-breaking work includes a whole gamut of musical techniques untapped for centuries: flutter-tonguing, overblowing and multiphonics. But don't think this is a collection of avant-garde squawks and squeaks. Tucker's vocabulary is focused on creating music that is a pleasure to listen to.
