Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Investing isn't brain surgery, says Steinberg, son of famed financier Saul Steinberg and publisher of the monthly newsletter Individual Investor. Persistence and common sense help, but the chief ingredient is getting the right information and using it correctly. The audacious claim in Steinberg's subtitle is based on his own successes using his "key elements," some of which are rapid earnings growth, insider buying, and price momentum. The longest and most helpful chapter walks the reader through the numbers of IBM's 1995 annual report, analyzing the income statement, the balance sheet, and the cash-flow statement. In concert with many other similar works, Steinberg's book assumes (probably wrongly) that the average investor will be phoning company officials for clarification and information. Some of his "key element" information is most readily available in his own newsletter, which he touts often, but his book should help even experienced investors become better stock pickers.?Alexander Wenner, Indiana Univ. From Booklist

Steinberg is the son of corporate raider and financier Saul Steinberg, but, at barely more than 30 years of age, Jonathan has already more than made it on his own. The Individual Investor is one of three investment publications he owns, and he has won the Wall Street Journal's regular stock-picking contest a number of times. Midas Investing explains his investment philosophy, which focuses on stocks with market capitalizations of less than $250 million, called "small caps." His five-part selection system includes looking at earnings, insider buying, momentum, and trends and themes, and it requires ongoing evaluation of selections and potential selections. Steinberg argues that small-cap investing favors the small investor "who does some homework," and he offers clear and practical tips suitable for even the novice on how to do the research necessary to complete that homework. 1.0 out of 5 stars Puh-leeze, don't make me laugh, December 16, 2001

This review is from: Midas Investing:: How You Can Make at Least 20% in the Stock Market This Year and Every Year (Hardcover)
This is a book written by a guy without a college education and no real experience in the financial industry. He was unusually lucky during the bull years of the 90's picking stocks on paper - and I should emphasize "on paper" because his one venture into money management ended disastrously. Since the market crash, his media "empire", along with the investments his company made, have been completely wiped out.

If you want to take investment advice from a notable failure, be my guest. Be aware that whoever wrote the editorial review probably got paid handsomely to write it.
