Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Covering roughly the time period from a.d. 1000 to 1500, Caselli devotes 11 4-page chapters to various aspects of medieval life. The discussion ranges from technology to hospices, from the Silk Road to the court of Burgundy. Given its brevity, the text gives a fairly comprehensive overview of life in the Middle Ages. Despite a dry and uninspired style, this could be a useful background resource for students looking for report material. Both Jay William's Life in the Middle Ages (Random, 1966; o.p.) and Marjorie Rowling's Everyday Life in Medieval Times (Dorset, 1987) cover the same material in greater depth and with a better narrative flow. Where Caselli's work supercedes them is in the illustrations. The tiny detailed drawings, reminiscent of Anno's, are excellent, especially those that show mechanical workings of waterwheels and clocks or the construction of buildings or armor. An excellent browsing book and helpful for reports, although it is best used with one of the titles mentioned above to flesh out the brief text. Ann Welton, Lake Dollof Elementary School, Auburn, Wash.
