Power metal veterans Grave Digger may not be as well known as their brother bands, Helloween, Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian, but they've been around as long as Helloween, and even longer than Blind Guardian! This 3cd set is a great starting point for the curious listener. If you don't like what you hear on these discs then most likely you won't dig the Grave Digger. Some German power metal bands have a very distinct theme to their lyrics and image. Blind Guardian is mostly fantasy based and Gamma Ray is sci-fi, so on first impression you would think Grave Digger would be the horror based band of the bunch. Instead, these guys are history buffs. And I can tell you that listening to them is alot more fun than high school history class. How do they sound? Well, they're a power metal band. Maybe my ears aren't screwed on straight but Grave Digger seem to play alot more heavy and aggressive than most power metal bands. If you've got a friend(and I'm sure you do coz everybody has a friend like this) that thinks power metal is wimpy, try playing one of these three albums for him. They may not like it, but they'll have to re-evaluate their thinking. The only criticism you usually hear about this group is the vocals. These are not traditional power metal vocals here. They're very rough, moreso than Hansi's from Blind Guardian. They're not quite death metal growls, but he wouldn't have to try very hard to make them growls. Some folks can't get past these. Sure they do sound kinda goofy at times, and when he tries to sing high he sounds like a constipated Brian Johnson, but after repeated listens you realize that the vocals are a big part of what makes Grave Digger Grave Digger. At least for me anyway. Hell, you may never get used to the vocals. You just have to buy it and see, and for the price you can't go wrong coz all three are very good, very solid albums.

I had heard all of "Excalibur", and about half of "Tunes of War" before I bought the CD. I loved the music to both of them.

I ordered this collection because it was cheaper than buying them separately. I especially love "Excalibur" and "Tunes of War", but I also read alot about the Legends of King Arthur, and the tales of the scotish Revolution. I've been interested in history, myths, and Legends for as long as I can remember.

The first CD in this trilogy is "Tunes of War", this CD tells the story of the Scotish Fight for Freedom (Some of you may be more familier with this story through the movie "Braveheart" staring Mel Gibson).

The second CD is "Knights of the Cross", this tells the story of the Templars, it is a tale of the Crusades, The Inquisition, and it also refers to the Holy Grail. It tells just how cruel this "holy wars" really were.

The third and final CD is the cd that actually introduced me to Grave Digger, "Excalibur", the title track which is commonly credited to Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, or Demons and Wizards on Kazaa, actually causes many to stumble upon Grave Digger. The song is a great song, and a very strong title track. I don't think it is the best track off this album. I personally love 3 songs off this Album, Emerald Eyes (About Guenivere), Morgane Le Fay, and The Round Table (Forever). If you dont want to buy the whole trilogy, at least buy this one CD this is one of the greatest Grave Digger Albums I have ever heard.

Well if you like Grave Digger like I do?, you will enjoy this 3 cd box set. Each cd comes complete with it's own jacket and other goodies like lyrics, bonus tracks etc. The stories told within each disc are three different times in history that are very interesting times for mankind for sure. You get the Scottish uprising against the English, remember Braveheart? You get the story about the Templar Knights, basically the Christian right trying to protect the Cross at all cost and you get the story of the knights of the Round Table/Excalibur. So all in all they've picked some very good topics to put some form of metal to and it all works very well together. Is it just me or does metal music and history seem to belong together?

My personnal favorite cd's are 1 & 2 with disc 3 bringing up the rear. It's not because it isn't very good, because it is. However to me it just seems to be lacking the memorable riffage the first two disc's contain.

Anyway, it's heavy and melodic and it sounds great.
