This book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history of beads! The narrative is readable and informative, and the color plates are gorgeous. I'm a modern-day bead artist, and I treasure this book for inspiration and understanding of those who have come before me. If you love antique beads, you have to have this book!

This book I've get first in Italian in 2008 in Ravenna and I was mortified that this book didn't in English or German (I don't speak Italian at all). But the real value of information in this book was so great that I boughtb it in Italian: attempt of classifications, time regognition and (!!!) pictures (!!!). Since Lois Sher Dubin "THE HISTORY OF BEADS from 30,000D.C. to the Present" this book could be the next "testament" for ancient beads collectors. Now I am very delighted to buy it in Engflish via Amazon. The only one disadvantage focusing on this book: time line from eight century A.D., not earlier :-(

This book is a fabulous pictorial representation of the beads of Mali, interspersed with a few from other places like Ethiopia. Having lived in Mali myself in the 1980s and seen many of these beads in the markets during my travels around the northern parts of the country, my fascination turned into a passion for collecting like the author Panini's obviously did. Although the extent of my collection pales to near insignificance in comparison with his, I'm delighted to see so many "old friends" on the pages of this luscious book. Highly recommended book for anyone interested in the beads of West Africa and Mali, especially those associated with the Islamic period.
