The authors feel that to learn a subject, you not only need an explanation of the theory, but also a lot of specific situations to see how ideas are executed in actual play. Accordingly, their book contains over 400 hands, most taken from real games, where the reader is given a poker problem. Every phase in a hand?s development has both a detailed explanation of the key ideas and a set of problems where the reader can see which ideas are most applicable. Then a thorough analysis is given of how an expert professional player would approach each problem. A practice test for poker,

It's a simple idea for a poker book! The authors have taken many poker hands [there are 500 problems]and described them. At important decision points they ask the reader which action to take. They then tell the reader which action they would take and why. Ostensibly this allow the reader to practice their poker decision making and compare their decisions with two pros.
The book is broken down into many sections and sub-sections that deal with different parts of the game. There are sections on pre-flop play(early, middle, late and blinds), play on the flop (overcards, drawing hands, etc.) and almost every other situation is covered. The book does a good job and it did help my play. My criticisms are those inherent in the method. The author's just cannot give all the information that a player would have. There's no discussion about the play of previous hands, or player tendencies. Also, and the authors acknowledge this, the play that they recommend might not be the only play that's appropriate. Lastly, everyone should note that the analysis is strictly aimed at the middle poker limits; 10-20 to 20-40. The analysis assumes the type of play that is typical at these limits. Games that are higher, or lower, limit can play quite differently than those described in this book. All in all, a good useful addition to my poker library.
