Editorial Reviews

Review

"Christie Erwin has given her life to caring for vulnerable children. Now she beautifully and transparently shares the stories that have both broken and expanded her heart. Her journey will have you asking two questions: 'How could I ever do this?' and 'How could I ever NOT do this?' The Middle Mom is a great book. --Barbara Rainey- Co-founder of FamilyLife

2.0 out of 5 stars Evangelical Absurdity, September 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Middle Mom: How to Grow Your Heart by Giving It Away ...a foster mom's journey (Paperback)
I had high hopes that this book would provide useful guidance for loving and letting go of foster children. Unfortunately, the author used all 153 pages to spout an Evangelical sermon to readers. The very first chapter revolved around her receiving an audible message from God, and essentially speaking in tongues to sing out a song about abortion! Really her only advise to fellow foster parents was to "Be Jesus" to all children... whatever that means.

Erwin also had very little experience with the state foster care system, as she worked for a private Christian adoption agency through most of the book. Her "foster care" service for this agency was comprised of 10 day segments of time babysitting newborns until their previously arranged adoptions into families that "God had ordained" were official.

A large portion of her focus during the book was to give bibles and minister to anyone with a child names Alex. Other highlights include self praise for sitting next to a previously unknown comatose toddler for three days in the hospital while she dies, going on frequent shopping sprees at Baby Gap, not adopting a bonded child that she and her family loved because she had not received confirmation from God, and actually stating on the very first page, "I have to be honest and say that I have always loved African American babies the best!"

Seriously, as absurd as this book sounds - it was indeed published! Don't waste your money on this one. Try Another Mother: Co-Parenting with the Foster Care System by Sarah Gerstenzang - it is a much more realistic and non-religious look into the foster care system.
