Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 4-6. Five seventh-grade girls offer advice and commentary to other young women ready to begin middle school. They discuss social and academic expectations, friendships and bullies, boys and dating, personal expression through fashion and makeup, and body changes and image. The writing style is reassuring and casual ("keeping your family life on an even keel . . . snagging an awesome, diverse group of buds"), with frequent sidebars. The strongest sections are those concerning popularity, cliques, and body image (the condensed version: be yourself). There's also a dictionary of online chat lingo and directions for removing one's bra without removing one's shirt. Although this doesn't address sexual identity issues or bad family situations, the majority of rising middle-school readers will find much good advice here. Kay Weisman

5.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves This Book, November 10, 2007
By
TLS (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Middle School: How to Deal (Paperback)
I got this for my youngest daughter the summer before she started middle school. She was very anxious about the change to a new school. My daughter read this book in a day, laughed out loud several times, and really loved it. She even pointed out passages and sections to me, so it was something that we could share. I truly believe it helped allay some of her fears and concerns. The book was apparently written by a group of girls who were in or recently completed middle school, which I think made it more "real" for my daughter. I highly recommend it for girls getting ready to attend or already in middle school. (Maybe not so much for boys.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Biased Review From a Proud Librarian, July 1, 2005
This review is from: Middle School: How to Deal (Paperback)
It is important to note that I have never reviewed books online for anyone, but I have made an exception for the work of these five former students of mine. Their hard work on this book, begun when they were in the seventh grade, has really paid off in this handsome and direct guide for anyone trying to negotiate the halls of their new middle school. Funny, insightful, and full of real-life information teens can put to immediate use, this is an essential book to have for the transition into the teenage years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!, May 18, 2005
A great book for anyone heading to middle school! It's not only full of terrific advice; it's also an inspiring story in itself (amazingly enough, the five authors wrote it while they were in middle school!). I sure wish I'd had a copy of this book back when I was eleven or twelve years old.
