5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Interesting Book!
As someone who attended Foxcroft School, a high school on the fringes of Middleburg and mentioned in the book, I can say that I know a great deal about Middleburg, VA, an enclave for artists, writers, the wealthy elite, and the horse obsessed. 3.0 out of 5 stars So So
I enjoying visiting Middleburg and had hopes for this one but for some reason it didn't keep my attention. The section about the Kennedy's was interesting and of course what would Middleburg be without a few sex scandals. Ended up just browsing through this one instead of reading it cover to cover which is surprising because the other reviewers mostly seemed to like it.

This book still managed to surprise me with its intriguing insights into the relationship between a town and its residents and the characteristics that make a town an elite enclave.

Vicky Moon's wonderful writing style allows you to picture this beautiful little town and its residents clearly and truthfully. The book makes you want to go visit Middleburg!
This is a must read for all those who are interested in learning more about communities you will never be a part of and for all Virginia residents!

4.0 out of 5 stars --Interesting read--, July 11, 2004

This review is from: Middleburg Mystique: A Peek Inside the Gates of Middleburg, Virginia (Capital Hometown Guides) (Paperback)
MIDDLEBURG MYSTIQUE is a book that helps to continue the idea that Middleburg is the magic town for the rich, famous, and those who want to be seen with the rich and famous. I live about 20 miles away from Middleburg, and it is a great place to go for lunch or dinner. The town is charming and historic and it's always fun to browse the antique shops.

Vicky Moon did a good job in writing about Middleburg. Her style is pleasant and she provides a lot of detailed information. I'm sure that the long time residents of the town had a few laughs over some of the outrageous behavior that's mentioned in the book. I think that adding the section called, Hunting Terms was a good idea. For those of us who are not familiar with fox hunting or equestrian activity, it was nice to have those terms explained. The author tells lots of stories and antidotes and with the exception of some of the nationally known residents like the Kennedy's, I really didn't know much about the families or "old guard" who live in the Middleburg area. I found the book to be very enlightening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Entertaining, April 17, 2004

As a recent "come-here" to the Virginia Hunt Country, I found The Middleburg Mystique fascinating, entertaining, and even enlightening. Thank God I read it, because some of its real-life characters are now my clients. It was good to have some insight! And for those interested in the lifestyles and history of the Virginia horsey set, it's a must-read!

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet and gentle, June 1, 2002

This peek into Middleburg is extremely entertaining. It's as sweet and gentle as a maiden aunt and even the scandals are touched on with delicacy. So, if you're looking for another Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil this is NOT the book for you. I really enjoyed this lighthearted peek into the Hunt Country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horse Country Delightfully Exposed, September 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Researching the Middleburg area in order to form an impression of this community while ghostwriting a memoir for a former long time Middleburg resident, I found Vicky Moon's The Middleburg Mystique to be incredibly helpful. I knew virtually nothing about Loudoun County and the 20118 zip code until I devoured this book, which offers a nitty gritty view of the town, various residents and former inhabitants. Thank you to Vicky Moon for providing an entertaining historical perspective--directly from the horse's mouth!

I loved this book. It was very entertaining, and at times, "laugh out loud" funny. The Middleburg lifestyle is written about in a charming style. It makes me want to move there myself, or at the very least, visit in the spring for the stable tour!

Some books written by residents or insiders provide fascinating insights into a community and are well worth reading in preparation for a visit. This one doesn't and isn't. It promises more than it delivers and the author's shallow observations and uninteresting writing style compound the sin.
