"Great" Midget Submarines,
By Filipe C. Ramires (Lisboa, PORTUGAL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midget Submarines of the Second World War (Chatham Pictorial Histories) (Hardcover)
This book of such famous publisher in the naval subjects is probably one or even the unique of its kind. Unfortunatelly naval subjects aren't much regarded by the international publishers and even those that publish this books use to forgot the subject of the Midget Submarines. The book itself is one excellent reference for submarines and midget submarines investigators and lovers. Starting with the birth of those ships in the early of the 20th century and detailling them during the critical phases of World War II. It is important to say that the book distinguishes three types of midget submarines: the Human Torpedoes like the Maiale or the Chariot; the Submersibles like the Molch, Biber and Kaiten; and the Midget Submarines like X-Craft and the Seehund. Tecnical details and historical information fulls the texts of the book with great credibility. Close in photos and excellent drawings by David J. Hill give us one dettailed overview of this small ships that have challenged greatest enemies and with few chances of survivability. It is the best overview book about this subject, it was too much too ask for a single book for a specific kind of ship or class of the Midget Submarines.

This review is from: Midget Submarines of the Second World War (Chatham Pictorial Histories) (Hardcover)
Wonderful pictures, excellent descriptions- EXCEPT IT COMPLETELY MISSES THE HULL THICKNESSES! I'm trying to design and build my own sub, and this is an excellent book. HOWEVER- it only mentions the thickness of the hulls once or twice- one its "3mm thick" (German SeaHound) and the "X-Craft" it lists at "8 pounds", then "10 Pounds", then "10 Pounds S". Theres no explaination on what these dimensions mean. .... ...
