I recently purchased the Midland 1001LWX through Amazon and, as expected and per usual, the item arrived in great condition and very quickly. I have only just begun to use it and find it to be quite capable.

It is small, comparable in size to the Cobra 19 Ultra III, maybe 1/2" longer (front to back) than the Cobra and just slightly narrower. For all intents and purpose they are the same size despite the listed dimensions for both suggesting that they are not as close in footprint. It is almost impossible to find a CB radio with as many features as the Midland 1001LWX in such a small case.

The display is a very clear LCD display with a very bright red backlight that is not adjustable for brightness. I am probably going to get a piece of repositionable window tint to see if I can tone it down a little bit since in my installation, it is very near to my head. This is my only real complaint with the Midland 1001LWX; lack of backlight adjustment.

As noted in others' reviews the Automatic Weather Scan feature can be a little finicky but I think it depends on, as always when dealing with radio systems, where you are in relation to the transmitting antenna and terrain. So far I have not had that much trouble with the feature and not enough to lower my overall rating of the unit.

I decided to use an Astatic 636L Noise Canceling Microphone as I did on my other installed CB radios. The 636L comes pre-wired in a "standard 4-pin configuration" suitable for Cobra, Uniden, Maxon and some others. I ordered one re-wired for a Midland radio and found it did not work with the Midland 1001LWX. I tried using the included Midland microphone with my new Midland radio and it worked, proving the radio was fine.

This is the perfect CB for my Jeep Cherokee, where mounting space is super tight. It's a very lightweight small CB so it'll fit anywhere.

PROS:
- it works like it's supposed to
- NOAA feature is great (and the reason I bought this model)
- CB noise limiter works very well on the Cherokee, which creates a lot of engine static
- speaker is loud and clear
- backlit display is easy on the eyes at night, easily readable in the daylight

CONS:
- the NOAA band doesn't seem to have a noise limiter, so I get a lot of stray engine
static on the weather band unless the engine is turned off.
- there's no mic gain switch and like most CBs, the stock microphone is crap. You'll need to buy a power mike to go with it

With this unit, an Astatic D104M6B-DX1 power mike, and a 4-foot Firestik hatch-mounted antenna tuned to about a 1.4 SWR, I'm putting out a solid signal about 6 miles in either direction on the interstate during daytime....at night on flat land it gets out a few more miles. I wanted a CB for use on a road trip through the upper mountain states where there's no cel phone service and this fits the bill. The NOAA band is a HUGE plus so I can get a "heads up" on nasty weather ahead.

As another reviewer stated, you can scan through the NOAA stations by just clicking the transmit button until you get the clearest station.

If you've got room to mount a bigger CB unit, you may want to get one with more features....but this little Midland gives me everything I need and the price can't be beat. Got mine for about $37 on Amazon, shipped to my door about 5 days after purchase.

First off, I replaced a very good performing Cobra 29LX with this unit, because that radio was huge, and with all the chrome it was just too much in a 2011 Silverado. I wanted something modern, but with good performance. This sure was the ticket. I tried the small Cobra that competes with this model, but it does not compare to this radio in terms of performance. The noise blocking feature is great for big metro areas like mine (mandantory actually). The squelch and RF gain take a bit of getting used to, but once you find the right balance, you can extract excellent reception. I use this radio with a cobra power mic, and the people I talk to often comment on the excellent sound quality, and I never get bad reports. The case is very small, and business-like. The display is excellent, and very modern. Having the weather function is a nice thing, though the radio is so sensitive, it will pick up the second closest station instead of the first, and IT not YOU selects which weather station to listen to. This is the lone defect of the radio. If you are within range of two weather stations and weather station reception is a big issue for you, don't get this radio, it will irritate you. Since I got this to chat with truckers and base station users while driving on the freeway, I really don't care about the weather issue, but some might. ***Remember you MUST tune your antenna SWR with ANY CB, period. If you don't your performance will likely suffer at the least, and at the worst you can smoke the radio. I use a tuneable tip firestick 2 antenna (4 foot), and some good RG8X coax, and have an SWR across the band of around 1.2, which is very good. Combine this radio with a well tuned antenna, and a power mic, and you will have a quality setup for not much more than $100. That's a great value. You can't go wrong with this unit.
