I don't often write reviews, but I think everyone should know my experience with 12 of these radios I purchased.
3 Separate orders over a 4 month period. First I ordered 8, then 2 & 2 more.

The first few weeks, the radios worked well, battery lasted a full day. Range was decent for indoor use and voice quality was decent as well.
after about a month, the first radio started failing.. At certain distance it would not receive or be able to transmit as well.
Over time, a second radio failed. Battery would not charge, meanwhile first radio battery started giving problems too.

We ordered another pair to replace the two radios that went out.

At this point some of the ones we got from our first order, started cutting out when transmitting.
At first we were thinking batteries we lose or defective. We tried everything, from rotating batteries to other radios and adding paper to stop them from moving.
Problem would still persist.

We could not find spare batteries anywhere, we called midland to see if we could order some directly and they claim, they do not make a spare battery yet (Aug 2013).

We ordered 2 new radios as one more simply stopped working within a few weeks more radios are now failing.

We use them in office environment. No contact with water, never dropped or abused.

OUT OF 12 RADIOS, TODAY ONLY 5 ARE STILL WORKING.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS.

I emailed Mildand and waiting to hear back from them.

After emailing back and forth with Midland, they are mailing me all new batteries for all the units.
One unit melted. Yes Melted (pictures posted)
They had me mail it to them at my cost. Still waiting to hear back about that.

These are very nice radios. Great sound quality, excellent look (they look solid, and not like toys at all). The performance is what you should expect (forget about 36 miles!) from a basic non-repeater capable GMRS two way radio. I can send/receive around town about 1 mile away, and across entire larger ski resorts (our primary use for them). The fast charges are excellent, and one of the primary reasons I went for these. Battery life is very good, at more than 24 hrs of standby with some talking mixed in. Might even be longer. The headsets are a joke, and I never use them. Midland offers much better options if you really need a headset.

Edit: I should have added that the first sets I received had a battery issue. They seemed like they wouldn't hold a charge, even after a full charging. The battery meters would jump all over, and the radios would switch to low power. I contacted Midland Customer Service, and they were outstanding. It took a few days to figure out what was going on, but once they did, they sent me three brand new sets as replacements, and I sent the bad units to them. The problem was something with the battery contacts or something with some of the initial shipments. The new radios work perfect and I give an A+ to Midland Customer Service.

Update 8/8/14: Midland did discontinue these radios when all these problems came to light, but they have now started producing them again...I contacted my Midland support rep a couple of weeks ago (that I was dealing with before) to find out what happened and the changes made. I was happy to hear they were back. She explained the issue was in fact dissimilar metals on the radio and battery pack. They have redesigned the radios so they cannot use AA batteries.

I was excited about these radios and was encouraged by all the good reviews. Unfortunately, my experience was not as good as others here. One of the radios of the pair would cut out during transmit. I thought I was unlukcy and had gotten a bad pair. I returned them and ordered another set. The second set I received was not any better. One of the radios from the 2nd set exhibited the same problem but would also go dead after a minute or two even though it indicated it has a full charge both on the radio display and on the charger. I suspect there is a quality control issue although I've yet to hear of any other reports of similar issues. None the less I will be returning the 2nd set and looking somewhere other than Midland for a good quality GMRS 2-way radio.

I purchased 2 sets of those on May 30 and they had a battery problem where batteries wouldn't hold the charge and the devices turned off every time you transmit. I contacted midland and reported the problem. They asked me to put regular batteries and try the devices. they worked like charm So Paola from midland told me they will send me new batteries within 2 weeks. 4 weeks later i maild Paola and asked her if they are not sending the batteries i will return the products for a refund as there was still a couple of days before the return windows closes. But surely she assured me that batteries will be shipped soon.
As my return windows ended. on july 1'st i received the following:
"Good Morning Toufic, I have sent some spare batteries out to you since the new ones have not arrived yet from overseas. This sometimes takes a while. I will try to keep you updated once I am updated.
Thank you for your patience,"
Guess what ?? the batteries she sent are all defected batteries that had the same problem as mine.
Answers i received while asking for the replacement batteries during the 4 month:
" Thank you for contacting Midland Radio Warranty Service Department. I am sorry to hear that the batteries have been giving you issues. There are batteries currently on order and should arrive in about a week. Once they are in, I will have 2 sent to you. Until then, your units can work on 4-AA alkaline batteries."
"I have not received the batteries yet. I am not sure what is the status is but I will check. I can only provide you information that has been giving to me."
"The batteries have not arrived yet. I should find out more information about the shipment tomorrow."
