4.0 out of 5 stars For the money; they're solid
Don't think you'll get advertised range out of any radio; that's under "perfect conditions" and "line of sight" (ie: over open water)

We use these for hiking trips and "getting lost in the mall" and they work well; we had some 10 mile units and these definately "punch thru" much better.

They work very well as hand held radios - as advertized. I did however purchase these units with the Midland AVPH1 Open Face Helmet Headset for Midland GMRS as a communications devices for scooter trips. They are not very loud. They are easily drowned out by wind and vehicle noises when used with an open faced helmet. To be fair they were only tested twice on busy...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reception, not a 30 miles in urban area, October 3, 2008
This review is from: Midland GXT720VP3 30-Mile 36-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
Hi.
I have purchase d the product two weeks ago and it seems to have pretty good reception range.
I've tested the range with my friend which live on a mountain aprox 10 KM away and we have a line of site. It had a good and clear reception.

In urban area with lot of buildings around it was dramatically reduced to 1 KM.

It is enough for my purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent walkie talkies, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Midland GXT720VP3 30-Mile 36-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I purchased these to use for my wedding videography business. I also purchased the clear "spy" ear piece so that we could hear each other during the reception. These work great and they work at long distances too.

Don't get caught up in the "28 mile" or "35 mile" thing, that is simply if you are on water or in a flat desert. I was able to walk several blocks away from my partner in downtown Louisville, Ky and they worked great.

Battery lasts for a long time also, just don't forget to turn them off when your done and charge them before you need them the next time :).

Great! I used it for work in Jamaica. I only found one time it didn't work and that was inside a very secure room. Otherwise it was excellent, so good i am going to purchase another set.

bought 2,, very good,,
one thing is the charger to charge the battery is not a floating charger so u can over charge ur unites and burn the batteries,, so when u charge them u need to keep an eye on the unite and when it says fully charge take them out of the charger,,,

They are easily drowned out by wind and vehicle noises when used with an open faced helmet. To be fair they were only tested twice on busy freeways both times.

VOX is not a good idea on the freeway! Every truck or car that passes activates the VOX and transmits that noise. Perhaps in a quieter area like a country road they would be less likely to activate - I haven't tried this yet.

I will try placing something behind the ear speakers to bring them closer to the edge of the helmet padding to reduce the distance between the ear and the speaker this will probably help quite a bit.

I was disappointed that even on full volume standing still it was difficult to hear. There simply is not enough volume out of the box, to be used as motorcycle communications devices.

Unfortunately this radio had not been reviewed prior to my purchase because it was a brand new product.
The batteries dies in a couple hours which isn't a surprise considering 5 watts of power but the battery level indicater always shows full charge...go figure.
Also, the directions are absolutely terrible, making the functions almost impossible to change. The menu codes are jibberish so you can't figure out how to navigate thru the functions.Midland GXT720VP3 36 Channel 30-Mile GMRS with NOAA All Hazard /Weather Alert, Pair

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set of Radios, July 27, 2010

These are just great radios. They are very versatile, sturdy, and have excellent battery life.

I got the "Secret-Service" ear pieces as well, which just adds to the usefulness of these radios.

I do have to add, they are not very user friendly if you are not familiar with radios. It can be hard to get around the menus and figure everything out. However, the instructions are very useful and help you overcome this hump very quickly.

There isn't a better set of radios on the market in this price range--in my opinion. Great buy!

We use the two way radio's in a retail store and are the only ones found to work in the two story building we have. Awesome service and delivery came with the radio's, thanks.
