5.0 out of 5 stars Great performance at a very reasonable price
I have owned several pairs of walkie talkies ranging from cheap "toy" types to more expensive brand name 2 way radios. This set of Midland LXT110 walkie talkies are very inexpensive yet perform quite well. They are of a sturdy enough plastic construction. The buttons do not feel overly tough, but for the price they are more than adequate.

3.0 out of 5 stars 2 Way Radio
My girls had fun with these for a little while. Would pick up other conversations sometimes. But not bad for the money. If you want to use them for more distance than a mile, I would upgrade.

This review is from: Midland LXT110 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)

All the features are quite typical for this sort of product. They are 22 channel radios running GMRS. You can scan channels to find an open or clearer channel. The units have VOX (Voice Operated Transmission) The auto-squelch feature helps reduce background noise. You can lock the keypad, dis/enable keypad tones, and there is a jack for a headset.

Each unit runs on three AAA batteries. You can of course use rechargeable AAA cells as well, and you can charge rechargeable batteries via the jack while they are installed in the walkie talkie.

The radios are advertised as having a range of `up to 12 miles'. While I am sure geography is a factor, I don't know that it is practical to assume you will get 12 miles of range. I tested these in a typical suburban neighborhood and was able to hear and be heard for approximately ½ mile. I also tried these in a shopping mall and found we could communicate well within ¼ mile of each other. I would think those are typical usage situations.

I did test them in a wooded area that was relatively flat and got close to a mile apart while staying in contact. I was only going about a mile away, so I don't know how much further the range would have extended before I lost contact.

For the price, I feel the performance is excellent. I have purchased "toy" walkie talkies for a similar price which performed as......toys. I think these radios are comparable to products that sell for about double the price or a little more.

If you want a pair of inexpensive 2 way radios, this is an excellent product.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a ham radio operator, I know good radios., February 13, 2009
This review is from: Midland LXT110 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
OK, I'm a ham, and I've used a LOT of radios. These are the best bang for the buck you can get at the time I write this. You could easily spend $100 or more for a ham radio that works as well as these do.

The best part is that if you want to give these away as gifts to young kids, it's OK. They're RoHS compliant, which means there's nothing poisonous or environmentally unfriendly in them. Watch out for the cheap Cobra radios. They've got lead all over them, and all that lead on your hands will contaminate everything you touch.

Kids will chew on the antennas, they'll rub their eyes, and they'll pick their noses. Maybe even your dog will munch on one of these Midland radios. But, don't worry, your kids will be fine, and rover isn't going to die a slow, horrible death from lead poisoning. And best of all, they're so inexpensive that you can go out and buy a new one!

We bought this so we could have a way to communicate with family in another car while on the road, if any problems with the signal we just change the channel and back to the fun. Great product, but the range of up to 12 Miles stated on the site is pushing it alot since I live in a country with lots of hills and buildings, but we got about 1/4 mile with some houses around but worked pretty well. I am very happy with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product for the price, February 16, 2009

This review is from: Midland LXT110 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I purchased this item on sale at Fry's Electronics for $10. I haven't tested the range yet but it's very easy to use and very clear. The auto sequelch seems to work well as I don't hear anything when the other channel isn't transmitting. The up/down arrows control the volume. The channel is set by pressing the mode button first and then selecting the channel with the up/down arrows. The nice thing is that the channel stays when you turn it off and back on. The sale price is cheaper than some toy walkie-talkies and the quality and clarity is great, no comparison to a toy. They don't have any privacy codes or voice scrambling, but for basic communications you can't beam them for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what is described...somewhat, August 9, 2009

This review is from: Midland LXT110 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
Ok to start off, I want to say that although these 2 way radios are small, they are in no means bad. They work well and do have all the features described except for one thing. The advertised ranges for almost every 2 way radio I have seen except maybe the military grade radios are complete B.S. You would be lucky to get maybe a quarter of the range. Those advertised ranges are really exaggerations of what would be gotten if you were to use this in a rural area. Given the fact that most people are going to be using this in a suburban to an urban environment with a lot of buildings and radio chatter, the range for these kinds of radios is greatly diminished. For this radio in particular, I have found to have gotten maybe up to 1.5 miles with no real static or 3-5 miles on a full battery with static and interference. The radios also don't have very good battery life. Be prepared to buy rechargeable AAA batteries because my radios were basically dead after 6 hours of moderate use. Overall, I liked the radios, although there are flaws, the price is really good, the quality of construction is good and it does to some degree do what it is advertised to do.

Pros:
Excellent Price
Fair-Good construction
Fair Call Quality

Cons:
Range maybe a quarter of what is actually advertised
short battery life

We bought these to play with our 18 month old....he has a phone fascination & we use these to "talk" to him. Great product - some reviews were sketchy but we keep it on a certain channel & haven't had any interference. Worked for us!! Sound is clear - seems to drain batteries (unless that's user error because our little guy knows how to turn them off & on).

Purchased this item for hunting and they seem to work very well so far. The use has been limited but they are clear and didn't notice any annoying feedback. For the price, these look to be a reliable purchase.

I bought these for my son so he could play with his friends, or "call" me when he was outside or in another room. The range on these were really great for that. There is a gas station almost a mile from our old house, and i could use them all the way there back to the house. It was fun testing them out. I would suggest these for any kid, they are great.

We bought a bunch of these for some quick communication in a church production. These and the headsets worked decently enough for the price. Both the radios and the headsets had about an 80% success rate. I never bothered returning the non-functioning ones as they were mostly a one-time use item for us.
