5.0 out of 5 stars Midland radio is excellent
This radio does what you need - not what you don't. The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear". It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want. It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Item
The only reason I even gave it one star was that it did turn on. The battery lasts about 1 hour fully charged, which is just sad. I could not communicate with a vessel that was 1 mile from me, which again is sad. Spend a little more money and get a better product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midland radio is excellent, October 28, 2007

It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag - also not a concern to me the way I use it.

I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's A Winner, October 7, 2008

It'll do all the VHF channels and weather...even has a weather alert. Ours runs all day on a charge and gets plugged in at night. One time we forgot to charge it and slapped the AA batteries in to keep us online. I love the call tones...lets our comrades know who is calling before they answer. Also like the 'lock' feature that prevents accidental setting changes.

For me, the negatives are:

1) It will receive, but not transmit while charging (we overcame this by simply using AA batteries when the rechargeable battery ran low).

2) The set up/menu system is not intuitive - we had to keep the manual handy for a couple weeks.

Would I buy another one? In a heartbeat!

My husband loves sailing, & I know he has reliable equipment on board with this radio. It's small but very sturdy, the reception is excellent. & the battery lasts a long time between charges.

This was a great deal on a full 5 watt handheld VHF radio. Doesn't look so rugged, but for my use, it's great. Came with all the accessories to use in any situation. Only problem is that every once in a while, the channel gets stuck on 16 and I have to reset the radio. Unfortunately, it happens so rarely I can't usually remember the reset process. Again, the best price on a handheld you'll find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midland Marine Radio, October 2, 2009

This radio package is a great value. When you look in the operators manual, the included accessory package is listed at over $39 dollars. The radio is very lite in weight. Since it is able to run on both rechargable as well as dry cell batteries, it is great for emergency communications. The only drawback is no external antenna connection and the antenna is not removable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Radio Facilatates Rescue, August 18, 2008

On our first trip out with the radio, we got stuck out in Pamlico Sound
in the dark, in a small sailboat, with a storm coming up. We wanted to go into Ocracoke Harbor, but the increasing winds were coming straight up the channel.
We called on Channel 16, the Coast Guard answered and towed us in.
Battery still has juice from its initial charge.
One comment on the manual is it did not mention that if you are in the Emergency Channel 16 mode, the Menu Key will not get you to the Weather Channels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Undocumented button sequence, January 27, 2011

This review is from: Midland NTVP1 Nautico 88-Channel Water-Resistant VHF Marine Two-Way Radio (Electronics)
I have both the water-resistant model and the less expensive model that comes with the waterproof case. For the money both are excellent. I was having the same problem with both radios leading me to believe there may be a button pushing sequence that would allow the radios to function as advertised.

The problem is that under some conditions, the radio gets locked in a situation where the channels and features can't be changed. Also the scanning feature is disabled. The only available capabilities are channels 16/9 and the weather channels.

After wrestling with this for a while,it turns out that the solution is really quite simple. The problem occurs after you enter the weather channels and then then switch to Channel 16. You now loose the ability to scan and change channels. To get out of the problem, enter the weather channels and hold the Menu button down to exit the weather channels. This will restore the functionality. As I think about this, it is logical that the method of getting into the weather channels, and as a result, getting into this problem, was holding the Menu button down.

In the reviews I read, several people complained about ease of operation. As long as you can learn your way around 3 buttons, all functions are readily available. It did take a couple of practice sessions to learn. Transmission and reception are exactly what you would expect from a hand held unit of 5 watts. Wonderfully small size and weather channels are both big pluses. Rechargeable battery pack OR 3 AA batteries is versatile.
