Book Description

June 30, 1999
Does "male menopause" really exist? Are hair loss and an expanding waistline inevitable? What about health fears--especially cancer and heart disease? And is Viagra really the answer to your dreams? Doctor and media personality Art Hister offers an informative and humorous guide for midlife men who want to make the most of these great years. Along with wittily refuting all the stereotypes about this stage, Hister explains the things you're dying to know--the common physiological and psychological changes that occur as men age, the latest scientific research on alternative therapies, and plans for eating, drinking, and generally living healthily. At the same time, he explodes myths about disease in middle age. And women: this is for you, too--if you want to understand the one you love! The author lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. 224 pages, 6 x 9. NEW IN PAPERBACK

This review is from: Midlife Man: A Not-So-Threatening Guide To Health And Sex For Man At His Peak (Hardcover)
I purchased the book because I saw a decent review in Natural Health Magazine. I knew I was in trouble when the print size the publisher chose was too small (big mistake because the taget audience, "midlife man" can't see too well anymore.) I didn't find any information in the book earth shattering and actually found the author's sense of humor irritating after a while.

First Sentence:
There was a time, I remember, when my hair did not plug up the drain after a shower, when my knees did not make those high-pitched, loose-board creaks they now emit every morning as I take my first steps, when I needed only one pair of unifocal glasses, when the pain from even a severely pulled muscle lasted no more than a few days and required no more therapy than my old standby typical-male remedy of feeling extremely sorry for myself, and when I didn't hesitate to bend down to pick up an object on the ground or help a friend move his household goods or try to open the lid of a virgin pickle jar using only my still-firm hands. Read the first page
