What is Finntroll? Black metal + polka. Does it work? Oh yes. To start off, Finntroll isn't too far of an offshoot from the controversial symphonic black metal movement, with their synth-heavy misanthropic noise, but they avoid what makes certain peers terrible by not taking themselves seriously... At all. Despite the strained screaming and lyrics about eating Christians, the music is very jovial, bringing to mind a bunch of trolls drinking ale in the woods. Infectious "Um PA um PA" thythms, irregularly picked strings, flute and accordian arrangements permeate ambiguously tongue-in-cheek pseudo-blasphemy, rendering Finntroll a fun and unique listening experience like a skilled blacksmith. That isn't to say that Finntroll compromises their heaviness and freezing black metal sound, though, which makes them quite a paradox. There are epic phases of internal harmonizing that sporadically bloom out into petals of much deserved, cheesy bombasticism. Finntroll sounds good on conventional and unconventional levels, so no matter from which perspective you approach the music, it's nearly impossible not to be smiling near the end of the album.

There ain't much to say it's just the same ol' finntroll blending death metal with hummpa, which sounds like music you would hear in a kid's Disney movie. One problem is that it's short, just under half an hour. Another thing is that the vocalist got on my nerves on some of the songs because his voiced sounded like it was a little worn out. You can hear clear vocals on some parts to some songs just like on Jaktens Tid. There are 2 instrumental pieces using the keyboard and some of the songs kinda have a medievel feel to them. The booklette comes with lyrics and english translations which are hard to read at times because of the background on the page. Overall this is a good finntroll cd and a must have for any fan, no matter the price.
