1.0 out of 5 stars What Happened?!, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Kindle Edition)
I've been an avid reader of Beverly Jenkins' books since 'Before the Dawn'. So when 'Midnight' was released I rushed out to pick up my copy. I read all my books from other authors first because I knew that Ms. Jenkins' work is always spicy, hot, informative, passionate, and a page turner. I could not have been more disappointed. The book started out great; however, the end was so disappointing because it seemed rushed. The ending didn't really seem to go with the story line, in addition the book seemed to focus more on the history of the war than the actual characters. It was a lackluster performance in my opinion and her editor should have sent her back to rewrite the ending. I know that Ms. Jenkins' work is always OUTSTANDING so to read this was frustrating to say the least!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars powerful historical romance, October 28, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1775 Boston, whether you remain a Tory or a rebel, everyone whispers revolt. Nicholas Grey comes home to find his father Primus dead; the British arrested and executed him last December after he met with the notorious "Lady Midnight."

He seeks vengeance for his dad's death. To achieve his objective he must start with Lady Midnight, but has no idea who she is. Nicholas believes a Tory tavern owner is behind his dad's death. However, he is attracted to the innkeeper's daughter Faith Kingston. She is a fierce supporter of freedom though she conceals her seditious activities that support Sons of Liberty. Faith is attracted to Nicholas, but knows to trust no one even if her heart says otherwise.

Once again, the great Beverly Jenkins provides a powerful historical romance as she brings her uncanny sense of time and place to showcase this time the role the Blacks played in the American Revolution. The lead couple is a terrific pairing of a worldly adventurer on a home mission of vengeance and a freedom lover who does more than drink tea as she risks her life as a spy. Her latest work affirms that Ms. Jenkins is one of the best historical writers today with a unique refreshing look at Americana through a perspective not seen enough in the sub-genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, October 27, 2010

Ms. Jenkins did it again! I loved the book. As with most of Ms. Jenkins' historical romances, you learn alot about African Americans history while being captivated with fictional characters. The characters Nick & Faith was enchanting. If you love historical romances...this would be a great read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best!, November 4, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was really excited when this book came out, because I love, love, love Mrs Jenkin's work! I will have to say that I was very dissappointed with this book. I won't spoil it for the rest of you, but I felt that this book was rushed. This is not Mrs Jenkin's normal work, but nevertheless I would still recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Reason Why I am a Fan of Beverly Jenkins, November 7, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Whenever I see that Jenkins has a new book coming out, my excitement elevates. I am impressed and beyond satisfied with "Midnight." Jenkins has stepped into another time period in African American history and she does it with such grace and accuracy. She is the best historical romance novelist of our time!! Hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Passion!, November 1, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been following Mrs. Jenkins' writing since 2003. I was on board the USS Nimitz then and I had at least another seven more months until my cruise was complete. I order all her books and read all of them in three months. Midnight has a great storyline. Faith and Nick are passionate characters that anyone would love to be. I could not put the book down. I plan on keeping this in my collection until the end of my days.

3.0 out of 5 stars not an official rating yet, November 10, 2010
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
Currently reading this book and it is taking me sometime to get into the story. The others by this author always hook me from the first line. It seems this tale is a lot more focused on the history of the time in which the story takes place instead of the romance between the main characters. I received this book as a gift and the woman who gave it to me finished it in two days. She really enjoyed it and promises not to spoil it for me, though she says I will be reintroduced to a certain fantasy man of mine lol. We will see. I recommend this book if only for the sole purpose of being a BJ historical romance collector.

Will hopefully change rating when finished reading.

This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am too disappointed, was excited when this book came out, when the first chapter do not hold your interest, the novel goes down hill from there.I should have paid attention to the reviews, they usually do not stir you in the wrong direction, when I check them most were positive, now they are mixed. The history lesson was appreciated, the story was not her best work. Purchasing this book was a waste of money!

This is my first historical read. Once I really got into the book, it captured my attention. Lucky for me I was on a 7 hour plane ride from Ireland. Reading this book made the plane ride go by so much quicker. The characters were well developed and I loved the plot. Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beverly Does It Again!, November 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Midnight (Avon) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really LOVED this book and so glad that I didn't take the previous bad reviews word for it. It took me more than 2 months to finally order it and while reading I kept dreading the "bad story" or "terrible ending" that other reviewers had mentioned. In the end I closed the book with regrets that the story was over, I loved it! I love how Ms. Jenkins creates new towns and people that resonate with me for weeks after reading the book. Her story of life & love in Tory-controlled Boston prior to the Revolutionary War highlights yet another part of black history that I knew nothing about. The love story between Faith and Nick was great, the drama was great (ugh her father was AWFUL) and once again she created townspeople I could picture knowing and 18th century mores & customs that were fascinating (bathing wearing a shift to avoid nudity?). I enjoyed this story very much and now that I've read ALL of Ms. Jenkins' historical romances I am so sad!! What will I read now?
