Book Description

"The monstrous fun continues." Locus

The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity—and to protect humanity from them. Verity Price is just trying to do her job, keeping the native cryptid population of Manhattan from getting into trouble, and doing a little ballroom dancing on the side. Enter Dominic De Luca, an operative for the Covenant of St. George, and Verity's on-again, off-again boyfriend. When he tells her that the Covenant is sending a full team to assess how ready the city is for a purge, Verity finds herself between a rock and a hard place. Stay, and risk her almost-certain death, or flee, and leave the cryptids of New York with nothing between them and the Covenant.

With allies and enemies on every side, and no safe way to turn, it's going to take some quickstepping for Verity to waltz out of this one. There's just one question on everyone's mind: Is this the last dance for Verity Price? Midnight Blue-Light Special is the second installment of the highly praised InCryptid series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The only thing more fun than an October Daye book is an InCryptid book. Swift narrative, charm, great world-building . . . all the McGuire trademarks.”
(Charlaine Harris, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author)

"Seanan McGuire's DISCOUNT ARMAGEDDON is an urban fantasy triple threat - smart and sexy and funny. The Aeslin mice alone are worth the price of the book, so consider a cast of truly ORIGINAL characters, a plot where weird never overwhelms logic, and some serious kickass world-building as a bonus."
(Tanya Huff, bestselling author of THE WILD WAYS)

"McGuire kicks off a new series with a smart-mouthed, engaging heroine and a city full of fantastical creatures. This may seem like familiar ground to McGuire fans, but she makes New York her own, twisting the city and its residents into curious shapes that will leave you wanting more. Verity’s voice is strong and sure as McGuire hints at a deeper history, one that future volumes will hopefully explore.”
(RT Book Reviews)

"Verity is a winning protagonist, and her snarky but loving observations on her world of bogeyman strip club owners, Japanese demon badger bartenders, and dragon princess waitresses make for a delightful read."
(Publishers Weekly)

"Discount Armageddon is an exceptionally well-written tale with a unique premise, fantastic character work, and a plot that just pulls you along until you finish. This is one for the urban fantasy enthusiasts out there—as well as for anyone who wants something different from most anything else on shelves today. Easily one of my favorite books of 2012."

"McGuire returns with book two in her InCryptid series, and if you loved the wisecracking dancer-cum-monster-savior Verity Price from Discount Armageddon, it’s a good bet you’ll also love this second installment.... The developing relationship between Dominic and Verity is one to savor, by turns tender and sharp." —RT Book Reviews

"McGuire has a way with words that transports the reader into the Incryptid world and doesn't let go of you until the end.... Midnight Blue-Light Special is a fantastic read, full of action, suspense, and humor. It’s just flat-out entertaining." —Night-Owl Reviews

About the Author

Seanan McGuire is a California-based author with a strong penchant for travel, and can regularly be found just about anyplace capable of supporting human life (as well as a few places that probably aren't). Early exposure to a vast number of books left her with a lifelong affection for the written word, and led, perhaps inevitably, to her writing books of her own, starting somewhere around the age of eleven. The October Daye novels are her first published fantasy series. The InCryptid novels are her second urban fantasy series for DAW. Both an artist and an accomplished, independent folk musician and song writer, Seanan shares her California farmhouse with a wide variety of books, musical instruments, local wildlife, and Siamese and Maine Coon cats. She holds packed concerts at her book signings in stores like Borderlands.

Discount Armageddon was a fluffy adventure with interesting beasties, a promising start to a fun new series. With Midnight Blue-Light Special, however, Hugo winner and New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire proves that she means business: this is a more serious, meaty novel that indicates the series is not afraid to go to darker places.

It's been almost a year since the events of Discount Armageddon--and, fair warning, although it is not necessary to read the previous book to follow the events of this one, it will spoil you on some major plot twists in the first book--and Verity Price, ballroom dancer/cryptozoologist, and Dominic De Luca, Covenant operative/boyfriend (?) are still feeling things out. I must admit that I don't quite see what Verity sees in Dominic besides the fact that he's hot, but I don't look too hard at romance in fiction as long as both people like each other. And those slashes are what make this book very interesting, as both characters face internal conflicts and must make a fateful, irrevocable choice. Will Verity choose dancing or cryptozoology? Will Dominic choose the Covenant or cryptozoology? Even though the choice seemed fairly obvious, because I knew that the POV would be switching to Alex in the next book, I was not 100% sure of which way either character would go, and that was fun.

What I love about this book is that it doesn't waste any time: only a few pages in, Dominic informs Verity that the Covenant is coming to New York to check up on him and potentially begin a purge of all cryptids. There's no big mystery to solve here: basically everyone is screwed, and Verity needs to stop it. Somehow. Because evacuating all the cryptids in such a short time isn't really a conceivable option.

Summary: Verity Price still doesn't know if she wants to be professional ballroom, or a professional cryptozoologist like the rest of her family. She also doesn't know if the handsome Dominic De Luca is her boyfriend or her enemy. But when the enemy of the Price family descends upon New York, she needs to decide faster than the Aeslin Mice can declare a religious holiday...

Review: I didn't think the second book in the InCryptid world could top the first book, but McGuire did it again. Each page of this novel kept me hooked till the end, and left me wishing for more!

The slight problem I had with Discount Armageddon was a lot of information was thrown at the reader. In this book, the pace is a bit slowed down, and it made a difference. Don't get me wrong, the storyline was still action-packed, but the pacing of the action never felt overwhelming. I got lost in Verity's (and Sarah's) adventures. From the building hopping to Verity's romantic musings, the tale just kept moving.

The world was pretty well set up in the first book, but this book expanded on our understandings of the various cryptids. We learned that even if they look human, they may still not be mammals, and even if they don't look human, doesn't mean they lack humanity. We were introduced to some new characters, like Verity's grandmother, Uncle Mike, and some nasty Covenant members.

McGuire's characters are very rich. The Toby Daye series is a bit more serious, and subdued, and the characters are nuanced beautifully as a reflection. The InCryptid series is fast paced and lively, and the characters are just as alive (even our very rigid hero, Dominic). We see the fears and emotions of every character and interpreted as our own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious, fascinating, and clever. March 9, 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

MIDNIGHT BLUE-LIGHT SPECIAL is one of those rare sequels that outshines even its predecessor, offering non-stop cryptid comedy as Verity prepares to thwart the Covenant in her own backyard. Well paced action in parallel with laugh out loud moments had me giggling, snorting, and reading excerpts to everyone within earshot.

Rather than being the type of series that continually leaves the reader hanging, it is clear that McGuire is building something here. The foundation from DISCOUNT ARMAGEDDON gave context to Verity's love life, but even readers new to the InCryptid series won't have a hard time getting up to speed in this richly described supernatural world. Dominic and Verity both have some dramatic life choices to make, but those weighty issues pop up organically in a plot that mainly focuses on Verity's hilarious inner monologue regarding cryptid species' idiosyncrasies and family history. The imminent Covenant threat had all the characters out of their comfort zone, which meant introducing a carnivorous waheela to the Aeslin mice, bargaining with pregnant Dragon princesses, and strategizing on how to hide a preternatural titty bar where gorgons dance the cancan from a religious organization who has vowed to wipe all monsters from the earth. In short, awesomeness from start to finish.

In a book that lavishes attention on the characteristics of cryptids, it's clear that the Prices and Healys are their own special breed. The distinct talents of this family caused a twist I didn't expect and the Covenant conflict culminated in some significant character changes that I can't wait to follow into book three. A comprehensive field guild to the preternatural ecosystem of New York City, anyone with a taste for the weird and the clever is going to love MIDNIGHT BLUE-LIGHT SPECIAL.

More About the Author

Seanan McGuire is a native Californian, which has resulted in her being exceedingly laid-back about venomous wildlife, and terrified of weather. When not writing urban fantasy (as herself) and science fiction thrillers (as Mira Grant), she likes to watch way too many horror movies, wander around in swamps, record albums of original music, and harass her cats.

Seanan is the author of the October Daye, InCryptid, and Indexing series of urban fantasies; the Newsflesh trilogy; the Parasitology duology; and the "Velveteen vs." superhero shorts. Her cats, Lilly, Alice, and Thomas, are plotting world domination even as we speak, but are easily distracted by feathers on sticks, so mankind is probably safe. For now.

Seanan's favorite things include the X-Men, folklore, and the Black Death. No, seriously. She writes all biographies in the third person, because it's easier that way.
