Book Description

10 and up
Bonnie, a girl torn between the harsh reality of her mother's weaknesses and her grandmother's strong will escapes her home one day by sneaking into her neighbor's hot air balloon. But instead of flying into the clouds and back down, she lands in another world, something like her own, but both kinder and somehow much more terrifying. She's not sure if she can ever leave this nearly parallel world and return to her own. And if she did, she isn't sure she'll be able to bring back with her the sense of warmth and love she has grown to cherish. Amazingly, she does both.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-An enjoyable fantasy that offers food for thought. Bonnie is trapped between the possibility of happiness with her mother and the reality that her controlling grandmother, "Grandbag," will never leave them alone. As Bonnie says, "She sees things, you see, and they have to be hers.- And it's not just things- It's people too. If someone's hers, she'll never let them go-." When Bonnie sees a neighbor blowing up a big, blue hot-air balloon, she tries to sneak aboard and inadvertently takes off alone. When she arrives in the "world beyond the sky," she finds that it looks exactly like her world-same people, same buildings, but with some definite differences- some of them scary. She meets the family she always wanted- her double lives happily with her mother, her father, and a new baby sister. Unfortunately, evil Grandbag's double also arrives in the village and has her sights set on her granddaughter's new family. Bonnie must try to save them, and herself, and in the process finds the courage to return home. The conclusion leaves open the possibility that happy endings do happen, and that just maybe, Bonnie will finally have the peace and happiness she has always longed for. This book is reminiscent of Madeleine L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time" series, with the characters learning more of themselves in other worlds and translating that knowledge into their everyday lives at home.

From Booklist

Gr. 5-7. Bonnie's oppressive grandmother, "Grandbag," torments her and her mother, Maybelle. To escape, Bonnie flees the apartment and discovers a strange, magical enclosure, a launching area for a balloon that takes her into a parallel world. There, a warm, loving farm family adopts Bonnie, who is amazed that she and a girl named Arabella look alike, as do Arabella's mum and Maybelle. Bonnie enjoys their cozy, idyllic life until a "Grandmother Marvel" appears and maliciously threatens the girls. Bonnie longs to stay but realizes she must return to her own world to save Arabella. Upon her return, Bonnie discovers some surprises that connect the two worlds. Do ancient spirits protect the hills? Why do people in one world look just like those in the other? Is the story a dream, or is it real? The deft interplay of fantasy and reality leaves some questions for readers to answer. Linda Perkins

More About the Author

I've been a published author for twenty-one years, and the anniversary e-book edition of my first novel, the Smarties Prize winning 'Midnight Blue' celebrates that date. But I've been making up stories all my life. Even before I could join my letters together, I was building worlds inside my head. The way I saw it, my parents' garden was full of hidden fairy folk, the alley behind it was their kingdom and if home life was boring at least the local library was close by - my gateway to all things fabulous and exciting.

I remember that library being built. I didn't come from a bookish family, but the day it opened, I enrolled. It became my second home. I loved everything about books, including their smell. If I could have bottled 'Essence of Library', it would have been up there with roses and vanilla ice-cream.

Reading brought me freedom but writing, I discovered, was even more liberating. Throughout my teens and early twenties I worked on an apprenticeship, writing poems, short-stories and unfinished novels, copying the styles of all my favourite authors, but not with enough confidence to truly have faith in my own.

It was only after the birth of my fifth child - not the best time to return to writing, with none of my children over the age of eleven and two not yet even in school - that I eventually found my literary voice. Trusting in that voice at long last, and in myself as a writer who didn't need to sound or feel like anybody else, I wrote 'Midnight Blue'. It was shortlisted for the Whitbread Children's Book Award, long-listed for the Carnegie and won the Smarties. The Guardian called that year by annus mirabilis.

I've been writing ever since. Eleven novels to date. In the interests of research I've been down lead mines and into haunted houses, have followed the courses of rivers from source to sea, have flown in a hot air balloon and even been out to the jungles of Belize. Who says the author's life is desk-bound!

My trip to Belize, funded by the British Arts Council, took me out into the rainforest to meet groups of young volunteers working on conservation projects to help save the forest from destruction. With my own eyes I saw how terrible that destruction was, and with my own eyes I saw that young people, with a will, can really make the difference to the world around them. I came out of that jungle determined to do justice to the commitment and hard work I'd seen, and to Belize as well, which is a fabulous country, rich in culture, mix of peoples, jungle and Caribbean coastline. The novel that came out of that trip is called 'In the Trees' and it's published by Faber & Faber.

Do look up my books. They're all for sale here on Amazon. My latest venture is the re-edited anniversary Kindle edition of 'Midnight Blue', which has a fabulous new cover.

When I'm not writing, I'm to be found on one of my weaving looms, or enjoying walking the Shropshire hills amongst which I live. I'm an avid reader too. I always have more books on the go than I can possibly finish.

But most of all I'm a writer. It's not a career. It's who you are. A way of life. And there are always new stories waiting to be written. So watch my Author Pages. There may be a new book out, but it won't be the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midnight Blue, December 9, 2003

Once i picked this book up i could not stop reading it. I felt like Bonnie the main character in this book. Whatever was happening i felt it to. Bonnie didn't know how good she had it until she left. This mirror life she entered showed her a family very much so like she wanted. She loved staying with them she never wanted to go back to her old life. But Bonnie gets stuck and she has to do something. The reason why she is there is for her to return. She also learned that you can run away from hate and that if everyone tries they can to. i dont want to ruin the story for you. So buy this book and travel into this mysterious world with Bonnie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good book for young girls, March 18, 2007
By
This review is from: Midnight Blue (Hardcover)
Bonnie's lived with her grandmother (Grandbag) most of her life. She's now living in an apartment with her mother (Maybelle). She wants to be happy with Maybelle, but knows that Grandbag will do everything in her power to sabotage that happiness. Grandbag is a bitter and controlling woman who must 'own' everything (people and things) that she sees.

When Bonnie (accompanied by the shadow boy) takes off in a midnight blue hot-air balloon she travels to a world 'beyond the sky' where she finds a land just like her own, but with some interesting differences. She is 'adopted' by a family (no questions asked) that is the family she's always yearned for. Her double (Arabella) and the mother (Maybelle) is complete with a dad and baby sister.

But the good is accompanied by the bad. Grandbag appears as Grandmother Marvel and she wants to possess Bonnie's parallel family. In order to save Arabella, Bonnie must find the courage to leave what she's always wanted and return home.

Will Bonnie find peace, happiness and family? Will her courage save Arabella and her family? Will Grandbag get her comeuppance? Is there a connection between Bonnie's world and Arabella's world?

Midnight Blue is a delightful tale of a young girl's quest for family and happiness. The fantasy element of an imperfect parallel world heightens the excitement and helps draw in the reader. And it offers up a delicious but subtle message of hope.

Armchair Interviews says: After reading Midnight Blue, readers will want to check out Pauline Fisk's other titles.
