Product Description

From Feinstein s at the Regency, Linda Purl salutes the great women of the 40s and 50s, from Ella Fitzgerald to Rosemary Clooney!

Straight from New York s Feinstein s at the Regency, Midnight Caravan salutes the great female singing stars of the 1940s and 1950s, from Ella Fitzgerald to Judy Garland to Rosemary Clooney! From sultry ballads to hot Latin jazz arrangements of Broadway tunes, the show features classic standards like My Romance, Shall We Dance, and Caravan, conjuring a nighttime Mad Men -esque world where the surroundings are posh, the drinks keep flowing, and nobody goes to bed before three! Linda Purl, best known from her long reign on television in such classics as Matlock and Happy Days and more recently of The Office, True Blood, and Homeland comes out of the box to glimmer as a true jazz chanteuse. Along with hip and masterful arranger/pianist Tedd Firth, she makes us rediscover what we loved about the great NY nightclub era, all over again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply glorious singing! April 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As accomplished an actress as she is, I've always enjoyed Linda's sultry, rich timbre and story-telling ability as a singer - and in this release she's truly come into her own and met her match in Tedd Firth, whose arrangements and keyboards provide the perfect setting for Linda to shine. Linda's voice wraps around you like a mink coat. The duet with Tom Wopat is delightful, and hearing the seldom-performed verses to these standards certainly enriches the experience - but it's Linda's gorgeous vocals that set this set apart from her previous recordings - that and the wonderful-sounding mix by engineer Gabe Moffat. For fans of the Great American Songbook and just-plain-splendid-singing, this is a must-have CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU DAREN'T HOPE... April 22, 2013
Format:Audio CD
...that there could be a singer, in this day and age, who could walk confidently in the footsteps of Fitzgerald, Garland, Clooney and Horne - and yet Linda Purl does. This is a terrifically satisfying album with Purl at the top of her game. Just when you think she can't possibly be more seductive and elegant with her phrasing and pitch, she becomes just that - so seemingly without effort that you sigh and grin in wonderment at her talent. This shouldn't surprise us, when we think of her talents as an actor; she has never appeared to be 'acting', she puts forth her character's truth intelligently, with all emotions flowing seamlessly. Here she does the same with each beautifully arranged number.

What separates good actors from great actors is their ability to truly listen to their fellow actor during a scene. When Purl is not singing lyrics, you can hear her truly listening to the music, not simply waiting for her next cue.

Never content to simply wear legendary shoes, Purl clearly has hers made by the same extraordinary cordonnier, but to her unique design.

5.0 out of 5 stars Purl has pipes! September 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD
While Linda Purl is best known as an accomplished actress, she also has a sultry voice (a kin to Judy Garland and Rosie Clooney)and truly comes into her own singing songs like Autumn in NY; I thought about you; and My Romance. She is in full swing with a delightful duet with Tom Wopat singing Oh Me, Oh My/Cheerful Little Earful. Moreover, hearing the seldom-performed introductory verses to these standards adds that extra story telling flair. She does a Latin-beat version of the song Shall We Dance (w/Desi Arnaz Jr. Percussion) providing a sway beat to the song. All in all, she truly holds her I said, Purl has pipes!

Wow!!! I had no idea Linda Purl had a voice like that! She does these songs the way they should have been done! This I think is her homage to female nightclub singers, it is excellent! Also, the duet she does with Tom Wopat is another surprise, to know his singing is excellent too!
