Maggie Reilly was a woman with no time on her hands. During the day she volunteered at the community center, her nights were given to her real job as a waitress, and any spare time was devoted to studying, and attending college classes. While she had a full life, she missed not having an active social life. That was why she was grateful for Tony. He was a writer, and when he was in town, they got together for fun. It was nothing serious; more a wonderful convenience for them both. She really didn't have people in her life. After growing up in foster care, she kept everyone at arms length not wanting relationships. Maggie was excited as she entered the agreed upon dark hotel room, but was disappointed when she couldn't seem to rouse him from sleep. When he started emerging from sleep, and spoke, she was horrified to realize that it wasn't Tony. She fled from the room leaving Ben Barrett with a lot of questions.
Maggie was working her shift at the bar when she waited on the table everyone kept saying was occupied by a movie star. She almost collapsed when a newspaper was lowered, and she found herself staring in to the eyes of the man she molested the night before. She never planned on sleeping with him, or letting him stay with her. Ben had never been more grateful for meeting someone. She told him the way it was, and didn't mind fighting with him if necessary. He definitely wasn't given the star treatment in her presence. He did find her hectic lifestyle exhausting and didn't know how she managed it every day. In a stroke of genius he decided to whisk Maggie away on an impromptu short vacation to the Bahamas. They were having a wonderful time until an old flame of Ben's stuck her claws out and made references to his slumming. It wasn't until then that Maggie realized she was trying to be someone she wasn't. She didn't leave town on an impulse or travel on a private plane. Being back at home on familiar ground, Maggie thought she would just go back to her normal life until the press met she and Ben at the airport. He managed to get her home without incident, but she was late for work, and ended up losing her job. The community center notified her that she wasn't wanted there anymore because of all the publicity. Her life was falling apart all because she dared to love Ben, the movie star. He knew he had to leave her as much as both of them hated the idea. Maggie is a wonderfully written complex character. She has only known heartache in her life after being abandoned by both her mother and father. She has goals and plans, but made no room for a relationship let alone falling in love. Ben lived what most considered a charmed life, but Maggie got a first hand glimpse of the horrendous other side to it. Maggie and Ben are a lot alike in many ways, but still had major issues to overcome. Emotional read that will tug at the heart.

An adult fairy tale translated into modern lingo...with hot sex to boot. "Midnight Encounters" is my first full-length (220 pages in trade paperback) read by author Elle Kennedy and it hit just the right mix between fantasy vs reality and serious vs light. In addition, there's no bondage, menage, or anal sex for those who enjoy their romances on the more 'vanilla' side ;) but there IS plenty of hot one man/one woman sex.
Maggie grew up an orphan and has filled her life with work, school, and volunteering. She really doesn't have 'time' for a relationship so she's perfectly happy with her current arrangement with Tony. He's a traveling writer who blows into town two or three times a year and during his short visits they meet at a local hotel to have sex. Then he's gone again and Maggie can return to her life of work, school, and volunteering. But combine a dead phone, a missed phone call, and no lights and Maggie's in for quite a surprise! She's a workaholic with abandonment issues and he's trying to hide from the paparazzi. Yet this oil-and-water pair can't deny the heat of their attraction. And their proximity quickly leads them to deeper emotions than either is ready, or willing, to admit. Cinderella and the Prince, writ modern style--that's what this story reminded me of...with lots of hot sex too. There's a bit of depth provided by her childhood as an orphan and status as a volunteer at a women/children's shelter but the author doesn't try to preach...I like that. There's no doubt about how the story will turn out, but then again isn't that part of the beauty of the Cinderella story? We all know she WILL get her prince and they WILL be happy. A fun way to spend a few hours with a book and a fan :)

This book is a bit whiny all the way thru. You have a actor, Ben Barrett, who just wants to be left alone and is ubhappy about the way his career is going. His propostion to Maggie to let him stay at her house for a week and to be her boy toy sounds a bit desperae and totally unrealistic. She falls for him but refuses to admit it till the very end then it ends. The book is a good read if you just dont have anything else to read. I do really like this auther so maybe you should try her other books first.
