4.0 out of 5 stars Magical cadence, charming story, imaginative illustrations!
My young nephew absolutely loves anything that rhymes, and finding stories that do can be difficult.

In looking for books for my nephew, far too many preach and teach, instead of entertain and stimulate the imagination. This book was just right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Carly Simon's Midnight Farm
I thought if she could sing a great song then she could write a great kids book. I was wrong. The book is OK but it is not great. The artwork is nice but the narrative is weak. There is not much of a story line but it would be adequate for a small child. My five-year-old daughter was bored after the first reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want to go to Midnight Farm!, April 10, 2003
By A Customer
Midnight Farm is an excellent story with wonderful illustrations. It is a whimsical tale about two little boys on a farm who wake one night to find their farm animals and crops rockin'. My two year old wants to read it every night because of the amusing rhythm, and I oblige, because even as an adult, I have yet to tire of the fantasy that everyday objects lead secret lives! The pictures are beautiful, with a mystical feel and tons of detail. You notice something new almost every read.

This book also has a sweet vulnerability that many of Carly's songs have which makes it very enduring. Overall, Midnight Farm is a great book that will appeal to several age groups. I wish it were more available- it would make a great gift book.

5.0 out of 5 stars cool, laid back rhyming fun!, July 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Midnight Farm (Hardcover)
Midnight Farm is a refreshing change from the stiff, contrived rhymes one usually comes in contact with. Simon's fresh, cool, musician-like freedom enables her to throw in words that would not normally be found in children's verse. Thoroughly enjoyable and imaginative, the accompanying illustrations fit exactly with the "lyrics."

5.0 out of 5 stars Midnight Magic!, July 15, 2002

Of all of the books that I have read to my three kids, this is my favorite. It is so magical, so beautiful. I have read it over and over again, and never get tired of it. Midnight Farm brings the dark night to life, and my children's imaginations go wild with all of the magical possibilties of what goes on when we are all asleep. This is a book that I give to all of the children that I love. It is magic!

My four year old loves this book! And I do, too, thanks to the lovely illustrations and rhythmic text. It is entertaining and great for a bed-time read. I wish Carly Simon would write more and get the same illustrator! He's fabulous!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better...than illustrator Delamare., December 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Midnight Farm (Hardcover)
Unless you're a die-hard Carly Simon completist, there's just one very good reason to have this book: the art of illustrator David Delamare. Sure, Carly is a marvelous singer/songwriter, but she proves here that the great children's book authors have nothing to fear from her competition. It's Delamare's artwork--lush, whimsical, magical without being cloying--that truly shines here. Like toast for the best jam, Simon's text is best seen as an excuse for the illustrations. Score -- Simon: 5, Delamare: 10, book lovers: 8

I received this book as a baby gift about 8 years ago and fell in love with it. I am a huge Carly Simon fan anyway but I didn't know she wrote any books. The story is adorable and the illustrations are fabulous. My son loved the story and pictures so much we had to read this book almost every night! I wound up memorizing most of it!
I bought some other Carly Simon books (which are mostly out of print) and they are just as good. My son was a little old for them by then but I liked them so much I bought them for myself.
I recently purchased this book for my brother & sister-in-law to read to their new baby boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely story you'll enjoy reading again and again., June 21, 1998

My son is 3 and this quickly became his favorite bedtime story. It is very lyrical, enjoyable to read and evokes images that you can have fun with. The illustrations are fanciful and he loves to find the "tulip conductor".

4.0 out of 5 stars Always educational Carly, December 17, 2000
By
Shade (Oklahoma City, OK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midnight Farm (Hardcover)
Well, when I was an actual child, she taught me the word "gavotte" in her smash radio and sales hit "You're So Vain." (By the way, it's a "difficult French dance.")

As a man in my 30's, she taught me the word "crinoline" in this book designated for 4-8 year-olds. (A "crinoline" is a woman's skirt made of stiff material, or the stiff material in a hat, etc. If you're a woman, you're more likely to know that).

I can't wait for the next word Carly teaches me.

Now when a grade-school child talks about a "crinoline," Carly Simon is the "suspect teacher."

This is a cool book. Cool author, cool illustrations.
