5.0 out of 5 stars Charming and Insightful!, August 11, 2010
This review is from: Midnight Frolic: A Ziegfeld Girl's True Story (Paperback)
I couldn't bear to put this book down the entire time I was reading it! I found myself so engaged with Marcelle and pulling for her throughout this recount of her childhood and foray into show business in the early 20th century. I was charmed, informed, and sad when I ran out of pages- I was left wanting more from this wonderful, hard-working showgirl. Great insights into not only Ziegfeld, but the other performers and producers of the era. Thanks for your memories, Marcelle!

"Lively first-hand account of the life of a Follies showgirl.
Earle was raised in poverty but, through her talent, beauty
and ambition, became a celebrated star who won Ziegfeld's
respect and admiration. An invaluable resource for anyone
interested in the Ziegfeld Follies. Marcelle is a charming
and intelligent backstage guide."
Sarah B. Arlington, TX

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading `Midnight Frolic' and was
sorry when I came to the end. I have read a lot of
Marcelle's memoirs and enjoy them the second and third
time around."

"I loved the book--couldn't put it down. I'm reading it
again the second time...and am sending a gift copy to a dear
friend."

"I looked forward to reading `Midnight Frolic' a second
time when I lent it to a friend. She took off on vacation and
is now reading it a second time herself. So what could I do?
I made her a gift of it."
Marcelle B. Punta Gorda, FL

" `Midnight Frolic' was most enjoyable. I only put it down
when absolutely necessary. It's now on loan to a friend. As
soon as it returns I'd like to read it again."
Eleanor P. Landing, NJ

"I have just finished `Midnight Frolic.' What a truly
enjoyable read it is! The best way I can describe it is to say
it was like tasty whipped cream on a desert....."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Vital Memoir Of A Vanished Era, October 17, 2011
By
Barry Rivadue (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Midnight Frolic: A Ziegfeld Girl's True Story (Paperback)
This is a very engaging memoir that covers the dozen years or so the author lived in the very thick of an historic, often overlooked part of show biz history. Flo Ziegfeld, Broadway, early Hollywood...Marcelle Earle was there, creating an invaluable firsthand account of a backstage world all too quickly eclipsed by subsequent generations of entertainers and styles of presentation. We may have old recordings and photos, newspaper clippings and songsheets from those years, and so much of it may seem so antiquated and distant to us after nearly a century, but Earle lived these times when it was all new and exciting. We're fortunate this book exists, and it deserves attention for the recollections it preserves.
