5.0 out of 5 stars Keyboard Groove Maestro, December 12, 1999
This review is from: Midnight (Audio CD)
I've been a Jeff Lorber Fan since his 1st album, so I've heard every single project he's released. IMOHO, he is simply the most phoenemal Jazz keyboardist on the planet! The results of his groovacious style, whether it's slow and melodic, stankin' funky, or just a smooth jazzy groove, he is always on queue. His improvisational skills are by far technically and melodically unmatched by anyone I've heard, whether it be Greg Phillinganes, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Dave Grusin, Chick Corea, etc. Although this CD (along with the last couple) is off his beaten path of synthesizers and samplers, which has made him a "Jazz Fusion" artist, it's definitely a welcomed change. This CD is very "acoustic" compared to his legendary "fusion" sound. However, his musical skill proves, what ever he does, he sounds great! If you are a keyboardist or just a Jazz lover, YOU HAVE TO buy this CD, you'll love it!

This is an excellent album of Mister Lorber. It starts extremely well and we soon discover the voice talents of Chelsea (nothing to do with the president's daughter) who contributes to the sexy side of the album. We will have to keep a close eye on this lady, who reminds me (though she has a more caressing voice) Maysa Leak, formerly from INCOGNITO. And, a big surprise, no saxes on this album... Jeff Lorber will soon be considered at the same level as George Duke, for his musical talents and for his ability to chase and discover young and unknown artists (he discovered, for instance, Kenny Gorelic and the late Art Porter) as his longevity (remember the times of the Jeff Lorber Fusion Band ?). It is one of the favourites on my show on a Spanish F.M., so Enjoy this album !

...though he writes and plays beautiful ballads with the best of them. This CD showcases all of his talents. The Godfather of the popular jazz format. ALL of his work is STRONG!
