5.0 out of 5 stars Keyboard Groove Maestro, December 12, 1999
This review is from: Midnight (Audio CD)
I've been a Jeff Lorber Fan since his 1st album, so I've heard every single project he's released. IMOHO, he is simply the most phoenemal Jazz keyboardist on the planet! The results of his groovacious style, whether it's slow and melodic, stankin' funky, or just a smooth jazzy groove, he is always on queue. His improvisational skills are by far technically and melodically unmatched by anyone I've heard, whether it be Greg Phillinganes, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Dave Grusin, Chick Corea, etc. Although this CD (along with the last couple) is off his beaten path of synthesizers and samplers, which has made him a "Jazz Fusion" artist, it's definitely a welcomed change. This CD is very "acoustic" compared to his legendary "fusion" sound. However, his musical skill proves, what ever he does, he sounds great! If you are a keyboardist or just a Jazz lover, YOU HAVE TO buy this CD, you'll love it!

This is an excellent album of Mister Lorber. It starts extremely well and we soon discover the voice talents of Chelsea (nothing to do with the president's daughter) who contributes to the sexy side of the album. We will have to keep a close eye on this lady, who reminds me (though she has a more caressing voice) Maysa Leak, formerly from INCOGNITO. And, a big surprise, no saxes on this album... Jeff Lorber will soon be considered at the same level as George Duke, for his musical talents and for his ability to chase and discover young and unknown artists (he discovered, for instance, Kenny Gorelic and the late Art Porter) as his longevity (remember the times of the Jeff Lorber Fusion Band ?). It is one of the favourites on my show on a Spanish F.M., so Enjoy this album !

...though he writes and plays beautiful ballads with the best of them. This CD showcases all of his talents. The Godfather of the popular jazz format. ALL of his work is STRONG!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Contemporary Jazz, February 28, 1999
By A Customer

I have been a fan of Jeff Lorber for many years going back to GREAT albums like Galaxian, It's a Fact, In the Heat of the Night etc. This album sounds great, with a lot of similarity to those previous albums. If you liked his older stuff, get this one. I previewd the whole album on Broadcast.com, and had to have it. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fine Line Between Smooth And Funky, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Midnight (Audio CD)
For twenty years Jeff Lorber's musicianship is,like many of his contemporaries in a league of his own. But as far as prolification Jeff has more in common with George Duke then people like Deodato,Bernard Wright or Rodney Franklin. He releases frequently and usually very strong releases. Even then the road Jeff travels is a rocky one. Smooth jazz tends to have commercial success but a lot of critical ravaging. 'Midnight' was an attempt to change all that. This album is more stripped down, live and earthier then many of his other releases;Jeff plays a lot of acoustic piano and fender rhodes solos. The title track is a superb example of this.Needless to say my favorite tracks are the funkier pieces such as Down Low" and the amazing "The Wild East" and "Feelin' It". But the soulful "I Ain't Thinkin' About You",featuring the emotional voice of Chelsea on vocals is another great tune here as well as a jazzy version of The Beatles "Dear Prudence". Overall 'Midnight' would never exactly compare to a classic such as 'Soft Space' from 1978 but for contemporary Jeff Lorber this is pretty good stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Next CD in the Jeff Lorber Saga, September 25, 1998

After waiting over a year for this CD I must say that it is well "Worth Waiting For". Jeff Lorber has once again shown another of his many talents. The greatest of which, is his ability to surround himself with great players. John Robinson plays the drums on most of the cuts. If you have never heard him take this piece of advice. "SEEK HIM OUT". Secondly Lorber has found another talented singer in Chelsea. I don't where he found her but she has style that just can't be missed. Check out the cuts "Never" and "I Aint Thinkin' About You" these are two Bluesy/Funky tunes that have some interesting changes on them. Then check out "Midnight" and "Down Low" very nice. For those of you who are use to the up-tempo rhythms of other Jeff Lorber CD's you won't find that here. What you will find is great music with a different perspective and insight. This is exceptional CD, and if you are Jeff Lorber fan like I am then you "MUST" add this one to the collection. Groove.
