Editorial Reviews

Review

"Blaine mesmerizingly spins tales of love, utter loss, despair, anxiety, uncertainty, hope, and redemption in these reflections of a misfit among misfits." - Publisher's Weekly

"A self-aware, literate memoir of adventures in the para-shrink trade... Blaine's memoir is likable and often compelling." - Kirkus Reviews

"If I had reached the end of my rope and darkness was prevailing and I somehow managed to crawl to some dark barstool corner of the world for one last shot before I caved in, I hope it would be this Jamie and this Jesus that walked in behind me." - River Jordan, author of Praying for Strangers

"Gorgeous, brilliantly written, deeply moving, funny as f-bomb, life-affirming and just plain stunning. J.M. Blaine's debut will blow you away." —Augusten Burroughs, author, Running with Scissors

"If Christianity has become a stale institution, then Jamie Blaine's Midnight, Jesus & Me might be the perfect antidote. A raw reminder of the Gospel's power." — Philip Gulley, bestselling author, If the Church Were Christian

"Blaine's got the gift that all great storytellers have — the ability to convey the crush of emotions in the tiniest of details. He renders otherwise ordinary people in resplendent detail, painting vignettes in heart-stopping strokes." — Joe Daly, Classic Rock magazine

"Blaine shines a 'there-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-I' light on the hidden world of psychiatric crisis response —leavened with much-needed humor — in a manner that can't help but engender empathy and compassion." —Randy Susan Meyers, bestselling author, The Comfort of Lies and The Murderer’s Daughters

"A stupendous achievement. Exhilarating, hilarious, a virtuosic exploration of mental illness in America. Seething with fury and frustration, Blaine captures the reader with great conviction." —Jeff Ragsdale, activist and author of Jeff, One Lonely Guy

"With pitch-perfect prose filled with raw heart and humor, Midnight, Jesus & Me reveals the hole in all of us that cannot be filled with anything but Divine love." —Jolina Petersheim, author, The Outcast

"Super stylized but absolutely authentic, these stories are told visually and with a musicality that punctuates the humor and heartbreak of crisis work and its haunting side effects." —Tony Shaff, filmmaker/television producer, MTV Networks

Don't be fooled by the title. This is not a book "for Christians," (tho' we Christians probably need it most.) This is not a "Go to church, read your Bible, preachy, tell you how to live your life" book. It's a book about late night crisis, people cracked and crumbling, and the shrink who shows up in the darkest hour.

Jamie Blaine, a psychotherapist, is a guy who never planned on growing up. He stays out `til the sun comes up, plays pinball endlessly, contemplates music excessively, roller skates like a kid, and faces peril with abandon. Like I said, he's a guy but this guy finds himself in unusual circumstances, dark desperate places no one ever wants to be, where few go willingly. In words he conjures the people and places, and reveals each moment so lucidly it awakens all the senses. Despite the often dismal setting, there is a vibrant colorful tone to his writing. Rainbows of humor pop up in the worst storms.

What sets Jamie apart is an innate ability to move past his own judgments and to peer deeply into another human being. Beyond the often ugly façade he finds a beauty in humanity most never dive deep enough to witness. Simultaneously, while at first fully guarded with disguises and social shields, we see him open up, become honest, raw... wise, and let people in. Read it slowly. Watch how your own perspective changes. Strangers feel more familiar and judgmental ideations feel obvious and foolish.

Will this book change your life? I sure as hell hope it does. Don't buy one - buy 2, and give one to someone who needs it. You'll know who they are. They're usually dressed real purdy on Sunday.

Midnight, Jesus & Me is a book you have to read. J.M. Blaine's twisted true stories are as compelling and addictive as his characters are compelled and addicted. His keen eye for physical detail and hilarious sense of metaphor are gripping, as are the off-the-wall scenarios and reveries he takes us through on his journey from adolescence to manhood. His philosophic approach to spirituality and rock 'n' roll attitude never slip into the cliched realm of cynicism, and it is this underlying innocence of spirit and discerning sense of reality that distinguishes him as a truly unique voice. A trusted narrator and subculture Superman of sorts, J.M. Blaine writes like a savior.

I cannot begin to tell you just how much I loved this book. I am literally calling the hotline every few minutes trying to buy another copy for a friend who could no doubt absorb some of its wisdom, agnosticism, full faith, and killer sense of humor. It's the prose equivalent of scoring ten free games on a vintage Elvira, with a core of genuine humanity and cultural insight. Highly recommended.

What a refreshing book. Amidst the airbrushed world which is so often portrayed to us, are the misfits, the downtrodden, those who's struggle with the human condition seems more difficult than it needs to be. Thankfully, we are shown glimpses of God's grace, His mercy, and all the fruits of the Spirit through the stories the author shares. Thanks for being part of my journey.
