A Beautiful Children's Tale,
By
This review is from: Midnight Kittens (Longbow) (Hardcover)
First of all, if anyone is expecting this book to be a feline version of '101 Dalmatians' or 'The Starlight Barking', then they may be disappointed. The kittens of the title have an important role to play in the book, but they are not the main protagonists.
That honour falls to Tom and Pam, orphaned twins who return home to spend their holidays with their grandmother. All the activity in the story takes place over a period of about ten days, so it's quite fast-paced, but it comes together nightly. We join Tom and Pam as they discover the links between the mysterious kittens that show up on the stroke of midnight, the secrets of dilapidated old Freke Hall, and the birthday wish of a hundred year old lady in a nursing home. Quite apart from being an exciting adventure, 'The Midnight Kittens' is also about love, trust, imagination and growing up. More human and less humourous than Dodie Smith's dog stories, 'The Midnight Kittens' is sweetly old-fashioned and very heartwarming. It would probably make a good transition book for slightly older reader who might be progressing from reading about the Dalmatians to reading book like 'I Capture the Castle'. It seems to be out of print in the US but it's definitely worth picking up if you find a copy in a second-hand store.
