Another wickedly funny and hot vampire tale,
By Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midnight Lover (The Vampire Series, Book 5) (Paperback)
Midnight Lover is another spell binding tale of vampires by Rosemary Laurey.
Vampire Toby Wise is helping out a fellow Vampire Tom Kyd by looking over the books at Conner Inc. Plus he has hired a staff of well-trained nurses to care for owner Piet Connor father of Tom's mate Elizabeth. Toby is happy and content with his life and ways so far but one of the caregivers has gotten under his skin in several ways. There is something about Laura Fox that draws Toby. Laura Fox is thrilled to be working for Toby. He is a kind, caring boss. But Laura is working there under false pretenses. Her father wants her to get damaging information on Connor Inc. This is easier said then done. Laura is caught red handed one night by Toby. He doesn't fire her for snooping in his study but compels her to tell him the truth. Toby and Laura together try to solve the strange goings on in town and the sudden change in her father. They grow close and their chemistry is sizzling. But how will Laura react when she finds out the truth about Toby and his friends. Rosemary Laurey's Vamps are delicious. This story is well told and compelling. The added treat of getting to revisit with past characters is delightful. Can't wait to sink my teeth into another story.

The author had me chuckling several times. I liked the way luck came into play to foil the bad guy on a few different occasions. I wasn't expecting luck to be a helper, but it was nice. I also liked reading about Toby's past. He was a slave in S. Carolina just before the Civil War. He still had scars on his back. He escaped his owner by hiding on a British ship which took him to England. He later became a vampire in England and eventually moved to Oregon. There wasn't a lot of time spent on this back story, but it was a good addition to the story. This is book 5 in a series. I have only read this one book, and I enjoyed it without knowing about the others. Another reviewer claims these books are better when read in order.
Story brief: Evil vampire Axel comes to town, Dark Falls, and feeds from and mind controls Granger Fox, the local newspaper owner. Axel forces Granger to ask his daughter Laura to get a job in Piet's home to gather evidence against Piet, who is old and dying. Piet lives in the nearby town of Devil's Elbow. Laura gets a job working as a nurse for Piet. Toby is a vampire who is staying at Piet's home to sort out Piet's business affairs. Adela, a witch, lives in Dark Falls and is a friend of Toby's. Axel has a familiar, an evil creature called a chupacabra. This creature is killing animals in the town. The local people think Adela is responsible and threaten her. Other vampires and a ghoul become involved. Laura and Toby fall in love during all the craziness. Story length: 330 pages. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 5. Rosemary Laurey captures your attention from start to finish. While some authors focus on one main character Rosemary makes each new book draws you into the lives of different vampire each time. I love that she lets you build a relationship with each character individually. I cannot wait unitil the next book is out.

One of the best series yet,

This review is from: Midnight Lover (The Vampire Series, Book 5) (Paperback)
The series centers around vampires not just from one covenant but several. The are vampires that can walk around during the day, but need to walk on the soil of thier homeland, there are vampires that can eat and drink, but need to sleep during the day and many others. The depictive writing of the author is excellent and sets you right into the world of her dreams and inspirations.

This book is a nice read with while sitting curled up with your favorite blanket next to the fire, sitting in for the long haul. As wtih all of Rosemary Laury's books, this one is a must. Steamy, yet full of bait and hook activity.

Fast paced paranormal romance,
This review is from: Midnight Lover (The Vampire Series, Book 5) (Paperback)
First I will say this is my first book by this author, and first romance book about vampires. I didn't read any of the other books in this series. This book was interesting, fast paced, and suspenseful. The author did a good job of brining all the details together and bringing closure to all situations by the end of the story. I thought the romance went REALLY fast (they were saying I Love You the same day they admitted there was chemistry between them) and the part of the ending that concerned Axel was over way too quick with very little fight. I was expecting more struggle than that. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and interesting because I have never read a vampire book before.

This book was very enjoyable. This is not a stand alone book and to get the most out of this book I do suggest that you read the previous books in the series.

bitingly good vampire romantic thriller,
This review is from: Midnight Lover (The Vampire Series, Book 5) (Paperback)
Vampire Toby Wise, a runaway slave who escaped to England and was turned when he was twenty-six, is now living in Oregon trying to solve a multitude of problems. As a favor to the ghoul Elizabeth, he is watching over her father whose mind was destroyed when a vampire held him in thrall. He is also watching over Lizzie's company Connor Inc. which the FBI are investigating for money laundering because the vampire Lizzie destroyed took control of her of father's business as well.
Lizzie's step-mother Adela calls Toby for help and when he arrives in Dark Falls, he finds a deputy who wants to arrest her for being a witch. She also tells him that a chupacabra, a monster thought to be a myth, is running loose and the townsfolk think it is Adela's familiar. He takes Adele back to his home where he finds his employee Laura Fox rifling through his files. She is doing it for her father after begging her to get some information on Connor Inc. He is in thrall to Axel who is kin to the vampire Lizzie destroyed. Axel wants to know what happened to him and he doesn't care who has to use or kill to get the information he wants. Toby and Laura, who are falling in love with each other, are in the middle of the action and she is in the most danger because she is mortal and everyone going after theis a vampire, ghoul or a witch. Toby has been a minor character in Rosemary Laurey's previous vampire books but in MIDNIGHT LOVER he gets to play center stage as he deals with a myriad of supernatural predators yet is not afraid to fall in love with a mortal. His beloved human is believable (adding a sense of authenticity to the plot) as she slowly accepts the existence of creatures of the night. This is a thoroughly delicious and bitingly good vampire romantic thriller. Harriet Klausner |
