Editorial Reviews

For their second release, the Cheathams not only featured five top horn soloists (trumpeter Snooky Young, altoist Curtis Peagler, both Dinky Morris and Jimmie Noone, Jr. on tenor, and bass trombonist Jimmy Cheatham), but also guest tenor Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. (Noone and Davis alternate). Pianist/singer Jeannie Cheatham is the lead voice, but there is plenty of solo space, while the rhythm section (bassist Red Callender and drummer John "Ironman" Harris) drives the ensembles. The program is split between older blues and more recent originals in a similar style, all of it swinging. A special highlight is the trio feature on "Midnight Mama." Spirited music that crosses many boundaries. 1. Wrong Direction Blues 2. C.C. Rider 3. Worried Life Blues 4. Big Fat Daddy 5. Midnight Mama 6. Piney Mama 7. Finance Company BlueS 8. How Long Blues 9. 5.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' KC blues, December 8, 2007
This review is from: Midnight Mama (Audio CD)
From the late 80's to the late 90's, Jimmy & Jennie Cheatham released a series of wonderful kansas city blues albums on the Concord label. Jeanie rocks the piano and Jimmy's trombone and horn arrangments gave the recordings the feel of a Big Joe Turner session from the 50's. great stuff. Jeanies' vocals are smooth and sassy and some of their original songs are very humorous in a ribald way! Any of the records are worth getting if you enjoy good jazz and blues delivered with enthusiasm and skill. Great stuff!!
