Love the album and them, as quoted from my 14 year old daughter.

Let me start off by saying this. I'm a guy that hated One Direction at first. But this albums mature sound caught my eye and I like it! My music taste ranges from metal to hard rock to soft rock, indie, folk, pop, rap, etc. I admit I liked N'Sync and thought One Direction was too bubble gum pop and no real man should go anywhere near their so called music. But then I heard the song "Story of my Life" and I couldn't resist the mature pop sound of it. I told myself that was the only One Direction song I would ever like. Then I started reading reviews for the album. People were calling it more mature and rock sounding. The core audience liked it a lot less and people who didn't like One Direction started to listen up including me. So I gave in and purchased my first and probably only One Direction album, telling the guy at the register it was "for my sister", but he knew....he knew. Here is a track by track review.

1. Best Song Ever: I heard about this song, and heard snippets of it in commercials, but I dismissed it as just another lame 1D song before I actually listened to it now. It does have an obvious The Who influence in the beginning. It's a feel good party song and its undeniably catchy, but not the best thing ever. Still good for this boy band standard. I will say that the verses remind me a bit of The Police, in a good way! 9/10
2. Story of My Life: This is the song that turned heads for many. At first I thought it was a new OneRepublic song before finding out the truth. Definitely the best song this boy band has put out so far. Very mature and the chorus will have many girls swooning and guys singing along while thinking of that special girl. The folk pop sound of it really is a game changer for this group. 10/10

I've gone on record more than once declaring my appreciation for the power-pop of One Direction, even though it might not be "cool" for someone of my age and gender. In addition to watching them form on X-Factor, I'm just a huge fan of well-delivered, uber-catchy pop/rock. And these guys have delivered with remarkable consistency. Their newest album marks a big shift in sound for them. The bombastic hooks are still there, but somewhere along the line the guys have become a surprisingly credible rock vocal group. I can't recall any other "boyband" release that sounds like this, which is pretty awesome. That said, like their debut album, this one is in dire need of some reshuffling (I just can't deal with Story Of My Life completely stealing the energy as the second track). Here's my track by track review with a twist: below is how I would have sequenced the album, and I think it plays all the better for it.

1. Alive - Previously relegated to a bonus track on the ultimate edition, I like this much better as a statement of intent to open the album. Not only is it a big, brash rock song, but its carpe diem theme seems to fit the album as a whole. Wherever this is on the running order, though, it's a total standout with its hair metal riffs and chorus turned up to eleven. 10/10

2. Best Song Ever - It's amazing how much bigger this sounds coming as the second track. Though it's been with us for awhile, I'd still say this will probably go down as being the best, most memorable song on here. 10/10

3. Diana - Another slab of arena-sized stadium rock, with verses reminiscent of the 80's and a chorus that burrows into your brain straightaway. Continues the rockier direction that I think the first half of the album should stick with. 10/10

I told myself last year after turning 21 that the 2nd album would be the last one I'd buy because I'm getting too "old" to listen to them. Then the third album came out. It had a more adult tone than the previous two. I loved it. "Story Of My Life," "You & I," "Right Now," etc. Their voices are stronger, the lyrics mean more. My first thought after listening: "I'm not too old after all!" They really are getting better with each album and I'm glad to have stuck with them since the first. I'm happy to still be on the same page with these boys. I would love to see them in concert on their future tour.

Boy bands from the 90's such as the Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, and N'SYNC have always been better than the boy bands today, but this album from One Direction definitely stands out compared to their last two albums. It represents their growth and maturity compared to their previous releases. I will review each song and my thoughts about them. But since I don't have the deluxe version, I will go over their 14 original songs on the album. Btw, I don't actually own the album...I borrowed it from the library.

1. Best Song Ever - We all know this song as being featured in the film "This Is Us". It's a very upbeat song with a somewhat rocky tune. I only wish that Liam and Louis had more parts to the song. But it's still a great song. A great choice to start off the album. 8/10.

2. Story Of My Life - This is One Direction's second single, and is a guitar ballad in which the members are singing about a girl, possibly a fan, or an ex-girlfriend that broke their hearts. I regarded it as a beautiful song the first time I heard it, but the song is being overplayed on the radio. It is probably more popular than "Best Song Ever", and may be up there with "What Makes You Beautiful", a song that I regard as their most notable single. When a song is overplayed on the radio, people will eventually get sick of hearing it, even if they loved it at first. 6/10.

3. Diana - The song was released as a promotional song for their album "Midnight Memories". I like this song better than the first two tracks off the album. It is possibly one of the contenders for their next hit single. 9/10.

4. Midnight Memories - The song has an 80's classic rock vibe to it.
