Editorial Reviews

The official debut album from LA female beat maker TOKiMONSTA, first female to be apart of Flying Lotus Los Angelesbased crew/label Brainfeeder. Born and raised in the South Bay area of Los Angeles,TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) was an unfocused pupil of classical piano. However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes by utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty vinyl. Her music is rooted in hip hop rhythms fused with classic soul, traditional percussion, avantgarde jazz, experimental electronica, psychedelic rock, and everything in betweenthere is no one way to describe her style. Through the creation of beats, she is able to fuse vintage styles with progressive sounds into something unique. Though distinctly known as being one of few female producers in her sphere, her music has come to represent itself. Toki has been featured regularly on various programs on BBC Radio 1, as well as numerous national radio stations around the world. She is also notably the first female to be apart of Flying Lotus Los Angelesbased crew/label BRAINFEEDER. As a recent participant of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy, she will continue her to create genre bending future music.

Tokimonsta's asymmetric beats and spaced-out Asian lounge melodies make Midnight Menu a brilliant album. Comparisons to Flying Lotus are inevitable, warranted, and perhaps even welcome, as Toki does more than just copy a formula - the formula gets rewritten from a new perspective. This album shows how the unique sounds of a single artist morph into an entire genre of music.

I'm still wading through the wonky weirdness, but so far I can tell I'm really digging on the vocal tracks and on some B-sides that fly out of nowhere and attach themselves to my frontal lobe.

Also check out Tokimonsta's appearance on LA Series 8 - where three more awesome tracks are ready to throw you into the volcano of trippy catharsis.

I bought this because TokiMonsta was coming to my uni for a panel about electronic music and electronic dance music. She was very nice and quite friendly!

As for the music on the album, they were very good (as pronounced by a self-proclaimed novice of this music genera) and had a great vibe that they produced. That really is all I can say because I'm pretty much a novice with this sort of thing...

I love this album and I would highly recommend it to others who are interested into a different style of music. Toki, has really shown her potential in this album and I definitely hope to see more of her work in the future!
