Review

When a delegation from the planet Franconia appears on Candor to ask for help in eliminating the Ellowan threat, the wise Candorians ask handsome, able Dane Calydon, a Thorwalian, to accompany the delegation back to Franconia and discover the truth. The Franconian delegation is comprised of Galya, a Tsier who says the mysterious Ellowan are intent on conquest, and Aiyana, a shrouded Keiroit, who challenges Dane with barbed and amusing remarks, even as he is repulsed by the amphibian image he sees in the data banks of her race. Before departing with the delegation, Dane's sarcastic companion Carob, a lingbat, offers one of his offspring, Batty, to replace him for this journey. Lingbats are intelligent winged rodents, who, with the use of a mind probe, have the ability to talk. Emerging from the wormhole, they awake to discover they aren't in orbit around Franconia, but crashing on another planet, Keir, homeworld of the Keiroits and the rebel Ellowan. Dane attempts to pilot the vessel, but Aiyana sabotages his efforts. Dane is badly injured in the crash, and Aiyana, moved with compassion, heals him, revealing herself to be not an amphibious Keroit, but a beautiful Ellowan woman. Aiyana says she has brought Dane to the swamps of Keir to hear the Ellowan's story. Gayla becomes upset with Dane as he strays from what she desires. Aiyana leads Dane into the swamp and to Arnoth, the Ellowan Prince. There Dane and Aiyana give in to their attraction, and Dane begins to learn about the Ellowan's history and culture, and the truth about who are the true aggressors in this bitter war. After reading this book, I went directly to Amazon and ordered the first installment, Dawn Star, along with another of Piel's backtitles. I loved this heroine! Aiyana has depth, inner beauty as well as outer beauty, and a strength that carries her through the story. Dane is fabulous, and the numerous lovemaking scenes sizzle. Even Batty, the lingbat, is a fully realized character. It was a delight watching him come into his own. Piel's touches of humor and sparkling dialogue make this one a classic! Stobie Piel has succeeded admirably in creating a complex political situation, an intriguing storyline, and a romance between Aiyana and Dane so hot I nearly burnt my fingers turning the pages! Excellent! First rate Storytelling! If you like high adventure and steamy romance, you will love The Midnight Moon! Phoebe Imel -- Copyright © 050198 Literary Times, Inc. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, February 15, 2000
This review is from: The Midnight Moon (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a big fan of futuristic and paranormal romances and it's usually difficult to find ones that are really good. But this one was an exception. The story and the characters the author creates are well written. I especially liked the heroine, Aiyana, who is brave and compassionate and is willing to risk everything to stop the destruction of her world and that of others. The hero Dane is just as well matched. The only slight problem I had was that the ending seemed a little rushed to me, but all in all it doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

Arnoths' book is the next in the series and it's just as good, if not better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Futuristoc romance at its' best, May 28, 1998

This review is from: The Midnight Moon (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
Thorwalian Dane Calydon is bored with his life. Trained in war and peace, he came to the moon of Candor seeking adventure, only to observe the Candorian Council negotiate peace through satellites. However, everything abruptly changes when the Tseir and the Keirot, two previously unknown races, arrive at Candor seeking help with their internal war with the hated Ellowans. The Candorians offer Dane up as their ambassador. The Tseir representative Aiyana rejects him as being too primitive, but her Keirot counterpart agrees to have him negotiate the peace.

Dane accompanies the ambassadors back to their home planets to learn more about the demands of the Ellowans so that a lasting peace can be procured. However, all is not what it seems and soon Dane is captured by the Ellowans, whose loathing of the Tseirs leave no room for negotiations. He has also fallen in love with Aiyana, who treats him like he is an ignorant primitive. Still, Dane knows that he must go deep into the countryside to uncover the truth so that peace can come to the Franconia system even if it means the cost is his life.

Stobie Piel is renowned for her fantastic futuristic romances that bring to life other worlds in a realistic, but lively manner. Her current tale, THE MIDNIGHT MOON is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller, filled with likable characters, especially the Lingbats. Though the story line leaves some unanswered questions, Ms. Piel provides fans of the sub-genre with a winning novel that could easily sell as a science fiction as well as a stirring romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Heart Grapping Fantasy That Is Out-Of-This-World!, March 20, 2005

This review is from: The Midnight Moon (Futuristic Romance) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first Stobie Piel book I had the great pleasure of reading.
I am just sorry it took until now, for me to come across such a well-written fantasy. Midnight Moon is the second of three in the series (The Dawn Star #1 and The White Sun #3). I also, love a fantasy that you do not have to spend time trying to figure out how to pronounce the character's name without using a translator....

You will fall in love with the male hero Dane Calydon. He is gorgeous and sexy beyond belief. Even through he is not an alpha type male I usually like to read about, Stobie Piel makes Dane a very virile hunk, with a heart and ego as big as Valenwood. You can not help, but fall in love with him. Aiyana Nidawi, his love interest is more the alpha type to be truthful...But, there is more to Aiyana than meets the eye. You will have to find that out by reading Midnight Moon for yourself! This Romance Fantasy, has one of the most original story lines, I have read in years.

Stobie Piel, will keep you turning pages faster than you can say, hyper-space! I can not wait to read more from this talented author, with an imagination that really is, out-of-this-world!
