midnight morning,

The word that comes to mind describing Greg Adams is TASTY. His trumpet epitomizes the term "smooth jazz". Of course, I've been a fan ever since his "TOWER OF POWER" days and he brings a great deal of that fantastic sound to this CD. In the world of smooth jazz trumpet which has seemed to be dominated by Rick Braun and Chris Botti--and DON'T GET ME WRONG--I am a big fan of both, Greg Adams seems to fall somewhere in the middle. This album has everything you want--soft soulful sounds, latin rythms, and undoubtedly the track "ANDREA" is one of the most beautiful and soul searching melodies I have ever heard---and done to perfection! And, of course, if you want to "get down" there's ROADHOUSE and SUP WITH THAT (the latter being my favorite).A big "THANK YOU" to Greg Adams for having the courage NOT to add vocals. Belive me, his music doesn't need anything but him!

Back where I didn't know I belong.,

Frustrated by hip-hop's message, bored with "copy cat"radio station presentations and the endless wall of "baby boomer" rock 'n roll.....what a pleasure to listen and hear the subtle, the intricate, the power and silky energy of Greg Adams' album entitled "Midnight Morning". Dive right in and jump to cut number two: "Breathe Again." That cut is now a staple of music to appear on any CD I might burn for "tunes on the go." His rendition of Sting's "Wrapped Around My Finger," is drop-dead perfection. "Andrea" is a woman I have always wanted to meet. His rendition makes me believe I have met her. I am going to learn to play the trumpet right now. Of course I am not going to...but listening to Greg Adams makes me wish I could play like him. And that I have learned is my inner being telling me that this is "good" for me. This music is not just music to my ears. Yeah, I like it. A lot. God bless you Mr. Adams and the fine group of musicians and producers that help make this such a delight.

The programming versus the playing,
By
This review is from: Midnight Morning (Audio CD)
This album is a wonderful display of the trumpet/flugelhorn playing of Greg Adams, and his tone throughout is superb. Basically the album is a three hander with Adams, James Wirrick and Ken Kessie being responsible for a lot of the composition and also the arranging and programming. Apart from that they are helped out by Kelly Moneymaker on Vocals (Track2) and Gary Herbig and Marlon McClain (10).Frankly, a bit more variety would have been welcome, because although there are some excellent tracks from the basic trio, particularly "Crosstown" and a take on Sting's "Wrapped around your finger", listening at a single sitting, the music seemed to demand greater variety. It's welcome when Adams switches to Flugelhorn on track 9 and James Wirrick adds some mandolin, and even better when the horns and evidence of a different programmer, cuts in on the final track (Marlon McClain).Undoubtedly there are smooth jazz radio play tracks on here, and I don't dispute the quality of Adam's playing, but perhaps next time they can add more variety without detracting from the quality of the playing by adding some other textures and sounds to enhance the overall sound.

The power of the trumpet,

Greg Adams is one of the great modern trumpet and flugelhorn players around. Other modern greats include Mark Isham and of course, Herb Albert. And I think this album is an excellent album. It's an album with various styles and rhythms. And I was also pleased to hear that he added no vocals to get in away of the music. The only disappointment on the album was the decision to remake weak songs like "Breathe Again" and "Wrapped Around Your Fingers". I would have preferred to hear originals. But the other tracks are outstanding. My five favorites are: 1)"Vendetta" This is a song to lay your head back to and just soak up the sounds. Beautiful. 2)"Midnight Morning". The title track is a little reminensent of earlier and better Kenny G. 3)"Siena" This is a great song to better appreciate the beauty of a trumpet.4)"Crosstown" The album opener starts with a luring, sexy overture, then goes into a wonderful down beat tempo song. Awesome. 5)"Sup With That" A little ditty for the feet. I am so glad to see that Greg Adams decided to take solo flights away from Tower Of Power. He has been in the shadow for too long, it is his time to shine now, and that he does through his wonderful trumpet.

I initially heard a single track on Sat Radio (happened to be the last track on this CD)and was impressed. I bought the entire CD based on all the glowing reviews here on Amazon. What were you all thinking? 90% of this CD is old covers that are done in a sappy and boring way.. In the future I'll never buy another CD unless all the tracks can be sampled. Mr. Adams needs to get back to Syncopated funk from his Tower of Power roots and stop trying to be a Rick Braun or Chris Botti.
