Kindergarten-Grade 3-A young girl is spending her first night in the mountains and is too excited to sleep. She sits by a window and listens to the night sounds that conjure up images of events earlier in the day: the brush of an owl's wings reminds her of making snow angels, the "rush of a fast-moving stream" triggers memories of sliding on a frozen creek. Lawson plays with language and the effect is often an elegant blending of the senses: "It's quiet in the mountains. So quiet, I hear the cold." The short, gentle refrains are perfectly balanced by full-page watercolor glimpses into the tranquil winter evening. The dreamy blues and purples of the serene night pictures contrast pleasingly with the active daylight scenes where both text and illustrations brim with energy. This book beautifully captures a child's sense of wonder and would make a lovely addition to a seasonal storytime.
