Book Description

February 24, 2004
For Danny, blunts keep the pain of his existence dull and bearable while chaperonin' hookers keeps the rent paid. But when a girl gets knifed on his watch, Danny can kiss all that goodbye and say hello to life on the lam. But when the cops assigned to the case are the straight-laced, God-fearing Detective Padilla and the detective-by-day/dom-by-night Sgt. Oh, Danny doesn't have a chance - but maybe the truth does. It's bondage, badges, and blackmail in this rollercoaster ride by novelist Gary Phillips (Shot Callerz, Perpetrators) and artists Jeremy Love (Gettosake Productions) and Jeff Wasson (Copybook Tales)!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Thriller, June 16, 2009
This review is from: Midnight Mover (Paperback)
Midnight Mover had the potential to be a great story, but it suffers from a few pitfalls that many thrillers do. Understand that there are many great things about this book, but ultimately the ending let me down.

The Pros:

The characters. There are three main characters in the story, all of them interesting and believable.

Danny Shaw is a man on the run from the military. He had been found guilty of selling stolen military equipment to the enemy, but slipped away before he could be jailed. Now his only work is as a bodyguard for escort girls. When one of them is murdered on the job, he has to go on the run again. While he is a scumbag in a scumbag world, Danny is a likeable characters (perhaps only because everyone else show around him is so unlikable). He is an honest Man, though no angel, who has been framed twice.

Sgt Cynthia Oh and Det Francisco Padilla, the police trying to tack Danny down, are also great characters. Padilla is a strict Christian family man who is extremely uncomfortable in the world of escort services and porn (where this story takes place). Sgt. Oh is a closet S&M enthusiast and a little too comfortable in the porn world. They are excellent foils, and their banter is among the highlights of the graphic novel.

The Cons:

The plot. The story presents itself like a murder mystery, but it is not. It's a thriller, and like all of these types of books, it is impossible to figure out who did it, without guessing blindly. The story moves along well, but is forced ,at the very end, to sum everything up and fill in the missing pieces in the last page. It certainly comes across as rushed, and might have been better if the author had let it lie.

While I know that this is not unheard of in these types of stories, I find it annoying. If you don't have a problem with it then add another star onto this review.
