Blue Underground is a company that has been making my dreams come true since I first found out about them a couple of years ago. They put out movies I've seen in poor quality and loved as well as movies I've always wanted to see based on poster art and director in better quality than most of these flicks probably deserve. This collection, the ninth in their ongoing Midnight Movies series, is another winner that contains both the former and the latter. I've pretty much committed myself to owning all of them, but this one was a no-brainer.

I loved HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD when I saw it and I've always wanted to see NIGHTMARE CITY because the poster is amazing and I've really enjoyed some of director Umberto Lenzi's other work. I was actually giddy when I saw that this set was coming out.

This double feature contains two zombie films that have very distinct takes on the genre as far as the monsters are concerned. The main similarity is that both of these movies, in their execution, are dangerously insane to the point that they will live forever in your mind as "what did I just watch" oddities. It has been claimed that HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD is "cluelessly bad," which might be the case. Watching the film forces one to wonder how director Bruno Mattei's works. Everything about the movie is bizarre and it is better seen than described. All in all, I love the movie and feel great owning it. NIGHTMARE CITY is a "fast zombie" movie in which they use tools and are more like the monsters in RABID, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, or 28 DAYS LATER. It's very fun to watch, but if you're on this page in the first place you know exactly what watching an Italian zombie flick from the early 80s is like. If not, this probably isn't the best place to start.

Fun cheesy zombie flicks. This is a fun double feature from Blue Underground. Neither movies are main classics but they are pretty entertaining. Of the 2, Nightmare City is the superior. Nightmare City has gone on to achieve cult status and is essentially a cult classic similarly to Cannibal Apocalypse. Hell of the Living Dead on the other hand is a really bad movie, but has a small cult following. Personally for me Nightmare City is the meat of the sandwich, and Hell is the bread/buns. Regardless I found both to be enjoyable.

HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980):

Plot- A gas leak causes a zombie outbreak in a tropical jungle some were (the distinct location is never mentioned).

My Thoughts- This is no Fulci or Romero film, but a Bruno Mattei film. So therefore expect cheese, gore, bad acting, and overall silliness. It's entertaining and all, but it lifts scenes from other movies (that I've never seen so I could careless) and part of the music from Goblin's Dawn of the Dead score (which I think is awful since I adore Romero's classic). The film is crap but it's entertaining crap.

Fun Facts- The documentary footage of the New Guinea tribe is real footage filmed of a burial service. The rest of the footage can be seen on the documentary Des morts (1979) .

Disc Content- Mattei Interview & Bio, trailer, and poster gallery.

NIGHTMARE CITY (1980):

Plot- Radioactive contamination turns people into killers.

My Thoughts- Nightmare City isn't that bad of a b-movie. Its got plenty of gore, and fun characters. The story may be nothing new, but the twist ending sure is for a zombie movie. It's a must see for any Italian horror or zombie fan. Also zombies use guns, yes guns!
