Book Description

Second book in the Detective Trevor Joseph series.

Compton Castle is a Victorian psychiatric hospital long overdue for demolition. Its warrens of rooms and acres of grounds, originally designed as a sanctuary for the mentally ill, now provide the ideal stalking ground for a serial killer.

Physically and mentally battered after his last case (Without Trace), Sergeant Trevor Joseph is a temporary inmate – but the hospital loses all therapeutic benefit when a corpse is dug out of a flowerbed. Then more bodies are found; young, female and both linked to the hospital. Everyone within the mouldering walls is in danger while a highly unpredictable malevolence remains at large. And, as patients and staff are interrogated by the police, the apparently motiveless killer watches and waits for the opportunity to strike again . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Introduced in Without Trace (1995), British police sergeant Trevor Joseph is recovering from depression in Compton Castle Psychiatric Hospital, where another patient insists that she saw someone bury a body on the grounds. After the body is found, Joseph's colleagues try to involve him in the investigation. Although he refuses, old habits die hard, and little by little he is pulled into the action. The victim, a former inmate at the hospital, had been buried alive, drugged and with her mouth glued shut. Two more victims, also buried alive, are discovered and official suspicion settles on the personnel and inmates of the Gothic hospital. Becoming more involved, Joseph must successfully navigate his way out of the Castle, with its surreal passages and abandoned wings, and discover its secrets in order to solve the case and emerge with a new life. John's focus on atmosphere and images of suffocation make the most of an essentially routine mystery.

From Booklist

Ponderous, Victorian Compton Castle Psychiatric Hospital makes an ideal setting for the various bodies, mostly of young women more or less dead, discovered planted about its widespread grounds. Temporary patient Sgt. Trevor Joseph has pretty well recovered from devastating physical wounds but needs to overcome their mental complications when he is called to investigate. The ensuing story is as much about Joseph's restoration to normal life and work as about a psychologically warped murderer's desperation and ultimate, total defeat. John provides ample clues and culs-de-sac along the way, fitting all naturally into the development of characters and narrative. Imaginatively conceived, smoothly written, and increasingly gripping, John's procedural should attract and hold readers right up to its explosive conclusion. William Beatty

To be honest, I didn't like the prologue at all, it was eerie and I didn't se any point in it (still don't, actually, after having read the whole story) and I nearly put the book down before it even got started. I am glad I went on though, because once it got going I was completely hooked!
This story has everything I want in a mystery, it is well written, the characters are very well developed and credible and the plot is truly captivating.
This is apparently the second book about Sergeant Trevor Joseph who, when the story starts, is a patient at the psychiatric hospital where the story takes place. Presumably it was events in the first book (Without Trace) that put him there, and it is probably better to read the books in the right order! (I had never heard of this series before, I found this on the free list, which is why I started with number two).
Those who like Elizabeth George's books about Lynley and Havers will probably enjoy this book, which has the same kind of story-telling, i.e. not a lot of violence, not a lot of sex, not a lot of humour, but a very well told, captivating and really hard to put down story with characters you get to know and want to read more about. I am glad I found a new author and a new series and I'll make sure I get the following books!

Trevor Joseph, depressed from previous murder case and injuries, finds refuge in an old psychiatric hospital when several young women patients and nurses are found buried alive under bushes in the grounds. He begins to help in the case. THe story doesn't slow up and the characters are very interesting . I have downloaded everything by her I can find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a book for the nervous! December 6, 2012
By Jacqui
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was one of the most compelling detective novels I have read. The atmosphere was sinister and unsettling. The setting of a mental hospital that is Gothic in style provides the perfect venue for murders of the creepiest kind.
Trevor Joseph's character and the situation he was in (recovering from a mental collapse due to severe physical injuries incurred in the line of duty) were unusual and yet convincing. It is his fragility and complex personality that make him such an empathetic 'hero'.
I found all the characters stirred my curiosity, and the flawed natures and pasts of many of these made it challenging to work out the culprit behind the murders. The book also provided a convincing picture of a modern mental hospital and the type of people who are attracted to working in such institutions. Once I started the book, I could not put it down. This is detective fiction at its best.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next one. There've been quite a few books I've read for free that gave me pause because they were so awful, so it's terrific to get one that I can't put down - this is one of them.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but... July 16, 2013

This was a fairly pedestrian mystery which did keep me turning the pages, but it was nothing earth-shatteringly good and I'm not sure I'll become a regular follower of the series...

only complaint if I knew order they were published in and would not be wondering where characters started. You read one characters are single healthy etc, read next book who is in hospital left his wife/girlfriend etc. moves along very well once it starts, stalls couple of times but again pulled an all nighted finishing it, just when i was getting sleepy plot explodes and your hooked to the end.
