I was fortunate to see Gryphon live in London at Sadler's Wells Theater sometime in 1974-'76 when I lived in London while doing my graduate school research. I was struck with the quality of their musicianship--indeed, the members have some impressive music school credentials--as well as their integration of ancient instruments (krumhorns, sackbuts and the like) into a rock idiom. They were part of the more intelligent sector of the Carnaby Street, mod/rocker, early punk scenes and their music still holds today--still fresh, original and enjoyable.

Gryphon was one of the premier progressive folk/rock groups from the 1970's. As their career progressed, they evolved into more of a rock sound. This album has a baroque feel to it. These guys are terrific musicians who play a variety of unusual instruments. This is more of a folk album than a rock album.
