I don't usually write reviews for CDs that are already out-of-print, but I'm going to make an exception to inform jazz customers of an amazing deal that is currently happening via one of Amazon's Marketplace vendors. The Fantasy label has unfortunately decided to remainder a large number of their Original Jazz Classics CDs, but thankfully Newbury Comics (based in the Boston area) has purchased an enormous selection of these titles, and is offering them at closeout prices. Some of these discs, like multi-instrumentalist Jerome Richardson's 1958 session "Midnight Oil," are absolutely terrific! On this session Richardson primarily plays flute (and tenor sax on the first track "Minorally"), and he is joined by a stellar band of Jimmy Cleveland on trombone (who sits out on the last tune "Lyric"), Hank Jones on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Joe Benjamin on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. Jazz devotees do yourself a favor, if you live in New England, go to a Newbury store and cash in on a once in a lifetime deal. If you live elsewhere, you can always have them shipped -- it'll be worth it.
