DAVID BROMBERG AT ANY TIME,
By Michael G. Batcho (McAdoo, PA (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midnight on the Water (Audio CD)
Back in 1973 at a small club in Philadelpha called "Grendle's Lair" i first saw and heard "the David Bromberg experience". i have been a fan and devoted listener to his music ever since. (Back in those days David had many of the finest artists record on his tracks . . . George Harrison, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Scaggs and many others who respected his musical artistry . . . he had been a sideman guitarist with Jerry Jeff Walker.)This album, "Midnight On The Water" is one of his best contibutions. My favorite tracks on it are the really rockin' blues number "I Like To Sleep Late In The Morning" -- the truly bluesy, "Don't Put That Thing On Me" -- the hyped-up bluegrass of , "Dark Hollow". The most evocative picture-painting instrumental track is the title cut: "Midnight On The Water" . . . just beautiful and even languishingly swampy. One track that has speacial meaning for me because it was a high point of the live performance I attended in Philadelphia back in 1973 . . .complete with audience participation singing background at the concert is "Mr. Blue". David delivers it with the appropriate sadness tinged into his voice. This album will undoubtedly last and last and last as his "high-point" contribution to America's musical heritage. David defies locking into any genre . . he's simply an artist . . . and an artist's artist . . no gimmicks . . no studio techno-manipulations and overtracking . . .just straight-out plain talent. Thanks David Bromberg for the classic tracks you have layed down for us and for the ages!

Excellent Craftmanship - Wonderful Song Choices,
By dk@calarts.edu (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midnight on the Water (Audio CD)
David Bromberg is a very good player. Midnight on the Water is a collection of songs that feature musicality but never overwhelms the song itself. (What A)Wonderful World features the backup singers of Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt! The range is from the happy-go-lucky I Like To Sleep Late In The Morning to the heart breaking The Joke's On Me. Two of the songs are instrumental - Yankee's Revenge and Midnight On The Water. Lots of picking and whistling, these songs help you feel what it must be like to have a lot of musicians playing together for the joy of it. After the double CD set, How Late'll Ya Play Til, Midnight On The Water is likely David's best CD.

The Bromberg album to own,
By A Customer
This review is from: Midnight on the Water (Audio CD)
Speaking as a devoted Bromberg follower, this is the best album to own. It's also the best album to give someone you are trying to interest in David. Don't Put That Thing On Me is a great song to listen to as you vacuum - don't ask - just pop on the headset and turn it up. Its an album to listen to on a hot afternoon with a cold beer, or to get up and waltz with your honey on a winter evening. Or you could waltz with your cold beer and listen with your honey, it's an easy album.

David Bromberg's Midnight on the Water,

This review is from: Midnight on the Water (Audio CD)
My parents had this album when I was young. I remembered liking it but, with my own growth, my appreciation of the complexity and beauty of the music is now ten fold. The level of musicianship which is shared on this recording is of the highest talent and the quality of this Columbia recording is the highest of any CD I've ever been exposed to. Of course, David Bromberg's voice is a timeless, soothing concotion which, in conjunction with his master instrumentations, he is capable of effortlessly gifting to the listener, a perfect sound and feeling of almost any style of music.

David Bromberg at his best. This is mostly the flat-picking and fiddling Dave and a relatively mellow listen. This is before the big Chicago blues period with the horns and all. Great tunes, including the Grateful Dead favorite Dark Hollow. I'm working on my third copy of this and I still play it frequently after 30 years. On my 10 desert island recordings list.

This album, along with 'How Late'll You Play Till?', soundtracked the Seventies and Eighties for a particular bunch of friends here in Oz. New Year's Eves; Birthdays; Weddings - whatever the occasion, the reels would be danced to, the ballads sung along with and the picking envied and imitated. It's that kind of music - inviting, exciting and enticing. 'I Like To Sleep Late In The Morning' became the personal theme song for a number of us, and why not? There are worse philosophies. But those recollections aside, what of the music? This is my favourite and most played Bromberg album. The 'Yankees Revenge' medley will have you out of your seat and dancing before you know what's happened (or you're dead); 'Don't Put That Thing On Me' is classic Bromberg blues; 'Mr. Blue' will worm its way into your head and stay there happily for years; 'Dark Hollow' is up there with the best (The G. Dead do a great version too); and 'The Jokes's On Me' is one of those beautifully sad songs that Bromberg does so well - blue but not beaten; world-weary but hopeful; full of the experiences of life. This is a well-crafted and well-varied album that will delight the senses and stay in your life for a long time once you've let it in.

If you like the genre of music Bromberg has recorded on this album, you will LOVE this album. If not, well, why bother. The title track is particularly beautiful.
