Biography

Levon Helm was in the right place at the right time. He saw the birth of rock and roll and though he’s too much of a gentleman to say it, his role in helping to keep that rebellious child healthy is more than just instrumental.

On May 26, 1940, Mark Lavon Helm was the second of four children born to Nell and Diamond Helm in Elaine, Arkansas. Diamond was a cotton farmer who ... Read more in Amazon's Levon Helm Store

Editorial Reviews

The Levon Helm Band is making more than music in Woodstock, NY nestled in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, they are orchestrating a musical carnival known as The Midnight Ramble. The idea is to recreate, inside Levon Helm Studios, the traveling shows (like F.S. WalcottOs Rabbit Foot Minstrel show) that played in the South where Levon grew up as a boy, embracing the merging musical traditions of the time; blues, gospel, country, rock and roll, bluegrass, rockabilly, soul and jazz. Levon Helm (The Band, R.C.O All-Stars) made a career on stage and screen as a singer, drummer, band leader, writer and actor. He has assembled some of the premiere musicians on the East Coast to take part in the carnival. The room is a unique studio, all wooden (no nails only wooden pegs holding the barnOs towering hemlock beams together) with locally quarried bluestone and the ambiance of a church hall. Guests include: Jonnie Johnson (Chuck Berry), Dr. John, Little Sammy Davis (Earl Hooker, Ike Turner), Jon Smith (The White Trash Horn Section, Edgar and Jonnie Winters), Jimmy Vivino (Max Weinberg Seven, Al Kooper), Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan), Mike Merritt (Max Weinberg Seven), Eric Lawrence, Steven Bernstein, Amy Helm, Glen Patscha, Fiona McBain, Byron Isaacs, Tony Leone, Sean Costello, Andrew Shober, Fred Scribner. The music is soulful and bluesy, layered with rich vocal accompaniment and slick musical arrangements, and grounded by the roots this music grew from. Volume one features the harmonica legend and blues singer Little Sammy Davis at the top of his game. Levon makes his first vocal debut in over ten years on Volume Two after successfully overcoming throat cancer, so it is a real treat for all of the fans who have missed that sweet southern voice. Digipak - OSP. Levon Helm. 2006.

This is really nice assemblage of bluesy americana compiled from several 2004 and 2005 sessions of the Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm's home/studio here in Woodstock. One of the things I really like about it is that you get to see Amy Helm, Levon's daughter, when still in her 30s in this informal setting plying her awesome voice in harmony with her dad and Fiona McBain ...some very nice harmony work for sure. Also featured are blues piano old-timer Johnnie Johnson (Chuck Berry's near lifelong pianist), Joe R Smith on sax, Steve Bernstein on trumpet, Glen Patscha on keyboards, Byron Isaacs or electric bass and, alternatively, stand-up/doghouse bass players Mike Merritt and Andrew Shober. On a couple of cuts from a 2005 session, master musicians Larry Campbell on guitar (who toured with Dylan for 7 years and has backed-upmany other well-known artists) and Jimmy Vivino of Conan's NBC band definately enhance these wonderful Levon Helm jar/rambles. All in all a delightful recording with quality musicians not interested in showing-off as much as coming together in a totally cooperative manner to make the essence of the music the true triumph.

Levon's value as a main contributor and driving force in "The Band" was underrated by Martin Scorsese in his filming of The Last Waltz. His excellence is exampled in the Midnight Ramble Sessions Volumes 1,2 and 3. Very cool to see the love and support he received from the music community with the great turnout of guest artists. True roots rock / blues rock fans will not be disappointed.
