Editorial Reviews

Midnight Son is the story of Jacob, a young man confined to a life of isolation, due to a rare skin disorder that prevents him from being exposed to sunlight. His world opens up when he meets Mary, a local bartender, and falls in love. Tragically, Jacob’s actions become increasingly bizarre as he struggles to cope with the effects of his worsening condition. Forced by the disease to drink human blood for sustenance, he must control his increasingly violent tendencies as local law enforcement narrow their focus on him as a suspect in a series of grisly murders.

Don't know if this movie came out in theatre but it should have. This is how a vampire movie should be done. Vampire movies always turn out into a romantic soap opera instead of a horror movie. I'm not saying this is the scariest vampire movie, but it's how it would be if it took place in 2012. This makes the list of my top 20 vampire movies. I saw it by myself. I liked it so much invited a friend and saw it together. This is the type of movie they would show on Sci Fi channel during the month of October in celebration of Halloween. Enjoy the movie.

I really enjoyed this movie, it is surprisingly well shot and paced, especially for an Indy. It has lots of atmosphere, and the director successfully creates an ever increasing sense of dread as the film unfolds. Also, the San Francisco area locations are well represented and add a nice sense of scale and intimacy to the proceedings. Some may find it less then action packed, but there is a lot of promise on display here that well cancels out whatever growing pains might be evident. Nice job.

Darn it I loved this movie. I've been thinking about it for days since seeing it. It's one of those films that lingers on the brain long after it's been viewed.

The acting is superb and there is such amazing attention to detail. The script is truly clever and, although a slow burn of a movie, watching it smolder and build to a bonfire is truly engrossing.

As others have said, this isn't so much a horror film in a traditional sense; it is more psychological horror intertwined with romance and a quite well executed one at that.

There was one lingering question that I still scratch my head at a bit and wish had been clarified, though:

<VER TINY SPOILER FOLLOWS!>

I'm confused about the dude who played the Caprisun drink in the car... I thought he was earlier dead and drained on the table so wasn't quite clear on how they were getting more "juice" out of him in the car ride.

<END SPOILER>

In the end, it's just a smart vampire flick for folks who like their vampire flicks smart, and the taste of it will linger on the lips and palette long after you've digested it. ;)

If you enjoy vampire movies and am tired of the same old same old, then this is a must see DVD. Its slow paced but not boring. Bloody but not gorey. Its definately not a gorefest and its definately not twilight, not a chick flick. Its about how a regular person like you and me deals with an illness he doesnt understand. Watch this movie as soon as you can.

Has to be one of the most sophisticated vampire film ever made, in my opinion. Incidentally, the title is also poetry for The Moon.
First off.....is the peace and the power, brother!, emanating throughout, and especially at the beginning. Even when this becomes compromised by violence, it still carries a lofty transcendental quality.
There are powerful metaphors running through the screen-play. I can figure out some of them, but for the most part the film is haunting for triggering an intuitive response to ,what seems to be its hidden messages. So yes, Midnight Son has a profound quality.
The most obvious themes it plays with is the artistic mind in some way or the nature of orgasm
Then the more obvious correlation between addiction to drugs and how vampires think. I have been close to someone with a chronic addiction plus fighting off their ex' and past enabler so ,believe me ,they are twin states of mind. The casting is just perfect with the young vampire and his coke-addicted girl-friend, who is yet as friendly, warm and cool as she is more voraciously stealthy in organising her life for the next line. The actor playing the vampire is almost better at the beginning of the film when he's still in the phase of being unaware he is one but figuring it out. Because as an ordinary human, he still looks like one in a duke-ish predatory way. Worse,haunted by himself, so there is real empathy for this guy through out the movie,because whatever he is or becomes his heart is true. Ha ha and feels bad for his victims.Meanwhile, there is colourfulness, punch and dynamism by the black guy who becomes a vampire and hip throughout. This brings the strange synergy of peace and violence at the same time. Awesome.
One smart movie. I can't say enough.....

I watched this movie about a year ago after looking up suggestions online for vampire movies that aren't the same-old soap opera that's popular these day and I was more than pleased.

It's a really well done Indy film that's more a character study than a plot driven narrative. It's dialogue heavy, slow, and captures the emotion of the main characters. The atmosphere is absorbing, the score fits the mood perfectly, and you feel this sense of isolation that leaves you feeling a little numb and hollow after the film is over (in a good way!)

I thought it was 'pretty good' at first, but since my first watching I re watched it with my husband and my best friend and it's now one of my favorite movies. It's exactly what a vampire movie should be, and it worth your time and your money. It's only an hour and a half long, but it doesn't feel rushed.

I just bought the HD digital and I'm glad I did. It doesn't have subtitles, which I recommend watching it with, since some of the dialogue is hard to make out, but it's not by any means unwatchable without it.

I look forward to whatever this director puts out next!
