3.0 out of 5 stars Expensive Proposition....., February 25, 2010
This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
I tried to buy some of these Midnight Special dvd's by mail when thy were advertized on tv. They offered you 1 free if you paid $10 for the first dvd. They charge you another $5 per disc for shipping & handling for a total of $20 after which you must agree to let them send you 2 dvd's per month for the rest of your life at $40 plus per month. I must admit that the picture and sound are quite remarkable but the bad thing is that you only get 1 or 2 songs by the artists you like most and a bunch of other music by artists you never cared much for. These dvds could have been much nicer if 4 or 5 songs had been featured by each artist and if the dvd's named the specific artists featured so that the buyer could choose the music most suitable to their liking. Instead you get a variety show mix of performances where you like 1 or 2 songs and pan the rest of the stuff. As my collection of dvd's grew, I realized that I only liked about 10 or 12 performances out of the whole stack and the rest was music that I doubt if I would ever watch again. For those who like a variety show format and have a lot of money, Midnight Special is for you..

4.0 out of 5 stars A perfect flashback, June 26, 2010
By
Glenn Mar (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
By far the best thing about this set is having a flashback to the old days, possibly even reliving vague memories of having seen these in the first place, and seeing how young all those artists look to you now. Sure, it would be nice to see more performances from the acts you love more, but it wouldn't be realistic to do it that way... so a little taste as broad as possible is a wise choice. I like that the one hit wonders are mixed in with the timeless stars, so I can get little treats like Orleans: Dance With Me that I would not get any other way.

It's somewhat irritating that Bert Sugarman feels compelled to plaster his name all over this. It's on the cover, and his name and Midnight Special logo fire up at the start of every song, plus credits after them. No doubt it's to provide proper attribution when people upload these to YouTube, but it's annoying.

Sound and picture are decent... not up to today's standards, naturally, but worthy of the DVD medium. I wouldn't pay the full TV price for these, but if you can find the set for less, it's a good watch. It seems like a great thing to have going during a party... everyone will get a kick out of something.

Another person mentioned that the songs don't play continuously... she just chose the wrong main menu option. The default first one plays only the song you select. Choose the second one "Play All" and it plays them all.

The stand-up comics included in the special features are another timeless nice touch. What an age we grew up in.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate blast from the past, March 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
I purchased this item as an anniversary gift for my husband, and only after exhausting every other gift idea imaginable. I figured that at least we could watch and remember the "good old days". The videos arrived promptly and we sat down and watched the first one. OMG!! What a hoot! We had more fun just watching the performers (how young Ann Murray looked!!) and wondering why performers in 1973 appear to sweat profusely on the stage, while performers in 2010 do not. The clothes, the hair, the platform heels....oh the memories this stirred!! For people who spell their age with an "F", this is the must have video set of the decade! The comedian performers somehow do not seem to be as funny as they were in the 70's, but the musical acts showcased on each video is pure gold. Buy it. You won't regret it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Music, High Quality Audio & Video, but You Can Buy This Direct for $139.00 Elsewhere, November 28, 2011
This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
This is an amazing product. I own the entire set. My parents (of all people) bought it for me two years ago. Each DvD features amazing performances by the best artists of the 70s. Some performances are legendary and by artists who died soon after filming (like Marvin Gaye). This set is valuable. It's resale value will always be high on ebay (go check for yourself) and just look at the price here! However, you can purchase the entire set direct from the midnight special website at www dot midnightspecial dot com for 139.99 + $10 s/h. It's still pretty steep, but its well worth it.

If you buy it for yourself and you really love this music, you'll watch them over and over again. they're amazing--they really are that good! If you're buying it for a 70's themed party that's cool too. You'll easily be able to sell the entire set at auction sites or here for more than you paid for it!

Enjoy!

Love the music, but you have to choose each song on the DVD's. Would rather have one song flow into the next. Otherwise it's great, a real blast from the past!

What a wonderful surprise to have received my product within just a few days. It was the fastest order I have ever received from the US. I was hesitant when I ordered it, reading the prior reviews about how the dvds aren't continuous or something, but the dvds are wonderful, they play beautifully and I am so happy with them. The only complaint I have is that there aren't more of them! This was my first experience & purchase with Amazon.com and I am thoroughly happy with the seller & the whole process!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Product, August 28, 2011

This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
I ordered this set for my son, who had borrowed some of these discs from his friend. He was very pleased with the item. He was disappointed, however, because some of his friends discs were missing or scratched. I saw this whole set on Amazon and couldn't believe the great price! Naturally, I ordered them for him and he is thrilled! He tells me all the time how great they are. The items arrived very quickly and the set is in perfect condition! I would definitely shop with this seller again.

5.0 out of 5 stars $899.99? Really? Do they mean $89.99?, July 31, 2011
This review is from: Midnight Special Legendary Performances 9 DVD Set from 1973-1980 + Million Sellers Bonus DVD & Booklet (DVD Audio)
I would consider buying this collection if I was sure the last 9 was just a typo.

$90.00 seems like a good deal for this collection, since it's somewhat less than what it costs to do the TV deal, and you get the added bonus of not having to wait or put up with all the payments.

I gave it 5 stars for what it is, but would take away some for the deal if it's on purpose.
