Product Description

MIDNIGHT SUN, a collection of love songs from throughout Grammy and Tony Award winning jazz/pop songstress Dee Dee Bridgewater's critically-acclaimed four decade career Midnight Sun is the ultimate mixed tape, traversing landscapes of melodically mournful tales of love lost, heartrending ballads about forever after and sultry promises of bliss.

From the Artist

"For years my fans and family have been asking me to compile a CD of my favorite love songs," says Bridgewater, "and Midnight Sun is my ode to them. Love in all its glory - for better or for worse - as expressed by some of the most amazing songwriters of our time. Come take a soothing walk down memory lane and revisit romantic moments of my musical past, a past brought to the present through this elegant compilation, presented to you in the name of love by my daughter and manager, Tulani Bridgewater-Kowalski. Relax and bathe yourself in the music of the Midnight Sun."

Dee Dee Bridgewater is one of the best female jazz singers not only in our time but for all-time. Two of her albums honoring the greatness of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday won her Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album: Dear Ella in 1998 and Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie with Love from Dee Dee in 2011.

This lovely compilation CD was released in August of 2011. It is the first compilation album of Ms. Bridgewater consisting of 11 of her best recordings. This collection is not only worthy to her fans but to those who appreciate singers who can impeccably deliver any song in an effortless manner and come out a winner. Some of the greatest moments in the history of Jazz Vocal can be heard in this collection.

The best cuts include the title track--Johnny Mercer/Lionel Hampton/Johnny Burke's "Midnight Sun," Ogden Nash/Kurt Weill's "Speak Low," Alan and Marilyn Bergman/Ivan Lins/Victor Martins' "The Island" and two of the most beautiful French songs ever recorded--Charles Trenet/Lee Wilson's "Que Reste-t'-il" and Edith Piaf/Lee Wilson/Marguerite Monnot's "L'hymne a L'amour." The latter was stunningly rendered in a combination of French and English lyrics with only one instrument played by a fine guitarist Luis Winsberg.

Albeit the collection's brevity, I can certainly recommend this album to jazz vocal fans considering Dee Dee Bridgewater's memorable renditions marked by crystal-clear clarity of vocals, the musicians' great interplay and arrangers' impressive charts and the choice of songs as well. It's a keeper!

Ms. Bridgewater has put together a varied selection of songs and even a few in French. All of the work here is sterling and polished. A Fabulous CD.

I've been a fan of Ms. Bridgewater's vocalizing for some time, and as I state in the title she doesn't disappoint this listener. I bought this disc last year (I think) and highly recommend it especially if, like me, you are a fan ... but if you've never had the pleasure of listening to her this is a good introduction.

I absolutely love this album. It's a rare chance to hear the exquisite lushness of Bridgewater's ballads in one collection. For listeners unfamiliar with Dee Dee, this is a beautiful introduction. For fans more accustomed to her dynamic recordings, this is an opportunity to get some of her gorgeous love songs in one place. To be truthful, I am totally biased. I adore this album and I adore Dee Dee.
