Midnight Verses Morning Poems is a great ride for committed poetry lovers and a beautiful introduction to those who may not familiar with the expression. Ashley Wilkerson gives a great balance of painting pictures of simple beauty, while at the same time discussing complex issues through written art. Her words not only impress, but they inform. It's a worthwhile collection of poetry, even sweeter when it's read more than once.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like these poems or not, but wow! Ms. Wilkerson is a woman with a mission, a brujita, a street preacher goddess with a good eye and a strong pen.In case you were sleeping, these poems will wake you up. All is not well in America, so Ms. Wilkerson offers art as a balm. Though many of her poem focus on the African American experience, they are not limited by skin color. They contain universal themes. Ms. Wilkerson doesn't candy-coat reality. She gives us what she sees. And in the end that is more than enough. In the tradition of Nikki Giovannni, she is actually tougher in some ways, more political, more like Gwendolyn Brooks who wrote in "A Prayer for my Daughter":

Considering that, all hatred driven hence,
The soul recovers radical innocence
And learns at last that it is self-delighting,
Self-appeasing, self-affrighting,
And that its own sweet will is heaven's will,
She can, though every face should scowl
And every windy quarter howl
Or every bellows burst, be happy still.

Ms. Wilkerson honors her ancestors in the beginning of her book. I think the ancestors would also honor her talent and passion.

This is one of the best poetic books that I have read in a long time. The variety of subject matter in each poem keeps me turning the page in anticipation for the next. I hope Ms. Wilkerson comes out with a new book soon! this was definitely a treat!
