5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
This is a book that you read effortlessly, despite the fact that it addresses some of life's most difficult questions. 3.0 out of 5 stars Skip the first few chapters
I had hoped the chapters to have more Q & A sessions with Sadhguru but the first few chapters were about Cheryl and her life...

She often writes her chapters like a novel(why do I have to know which way the breeze is blowing?)...she needs to skip all the niceties and just focus on her questions with Sadhguru and share his insight with us..

This is a book that you read effortlessly, despite the fact that it addresses some of life's most difficult questions. I was taken by the fact that Richard from Texas (the character that so many of us love from Eat, Pray, Love) wrote the forward and that Richard is a devotee of the mystic, Sadghuru Jaggi Vasudev, who is a co-author. I also found that I could easily identify with the other author Cheryl Simone, her trials and personal struggles, and her search for someone to help her make sense of this life. How fortunate she was to have the attention of her guru for a whole week - I had a chance to meet him at the Washington, D.C. launch of the book last week that I had learned about on the Isha Foundation website. I urge anyone who is a seeker to avail yourself of the opportunity to sit with him and listen to his practical wisdom.

Update: 10/25/2008 - I continue to be baffled at the 5-star reviews this book has garnered here...Granted, the reviewers maybe spell-bound but there isn't any new information in this book that most of you would have picked it up in your spiritual path...

Midnights with the Mystic: A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss

What a wonderful recounting of her encounters with a truly remarkable man. So many spiritual teachers are so lofty and out of this world that they lose me. Her teacher is so insightful and yet he is also grounded and practical at the same time. This is a book that I feel sure that I will read many times. And thank you to Cheryl for sharing so much of your own journey. It makes the book even richer to hear of your spiritual quest along with the wisdom and insights of your teacher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, May 2, 2008

This is the most extraordinary book I have read on Spirituality and the importance of Yoga in ones life. Yoga as explained by the Guru is a technology to transcend ones limitations and in unifying with the infinite. The Author Cheryl Simone takes you through her life and exploration of spirituality that leads her to India's most renowned Guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. Her midnight conversations with the master at her lakehouse in Tennessee are thought provoking and address the most simple and subtle aspects on life that we are unaware of. I would highly highly recommend this book to all readers who want to live life in full awareness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Seekers, May 16, 2008

This review is from: Midnights with the Mystic: A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss (Paperback)
If, like me, you have seen the recent webcasts with Eckhart Tolle and Oprah and have found meaning in the teachings in "A New Earth", you will find that this book adds both depth and dimension to what you have learned there. There is so much clarity and wisdom in this mystic's words that they will leave you dumbfounded. Plus, he offers contemporary techniques that go far beyond the "self-improvement tools" we've all tried for years. Take a dip into this deep pool and you will come away transformed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Format, Simply Profound, May 17, 2008
This review is from: Midnights with the Mystic: A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss (Paperback)
A must read for one and all!

Sadhguru is amazing. His way of communicating profound truths in a simple and easy-to-understand conversational format, punctuated with humorous anecdotes, is what makes this book stand apart from other popular books in it's genre.

I was so taken by the book, that I have bought ten more copies to gift to friends.

Video snippets of his talks are also available on Youtube, and once you listen to him you cannot but help wanting more !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Highly Disappointing, September 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Midnights with the Mystic: A Little Guide to Freedom and Bliss (Paperback)
After seeing the hundreds of 5-star reviews and virtually no poor ones, I had to purchase this book just to see what all of the hype was about. Unfortunately, it is all hype. The majority of the book is nothing but the author literally GUSHING over the famed "guru" and how wise and magnificent he is. Jesus Christ himself has never been written about in as much reverence and awe as Simone writes about this guy named Sadhguru. Again, that comprises the bulk of this book, all of which is useless to anyone seeking a little freedom and bliss.

When Simone occasionally takes time out from lavishing praise on Sadhguru, you the reader are of course eager to hear the man himself speak and to be blown away as well. Not surprisingly, his wisdom and insight do not even come close to living up to the hype. Clear your mind, let go of worldly possessions, embrace the infinite, etc. Same old hyperbole that has been regurgitated again and again by countless other mere mortals throughout history.

All I wanted was a little fresh perspective on life, a little advice on seeings things in a different way. I certainly did not have high expectations, but I did want to give the book a chance and thus tried to stay open-minded for as long as I could. After getting about 75% of the way through, I was satisfied that I had been duped and regrettably put the book down for good. I had to laugh at other reviewers who talked about how the book gets better every time you read it. They obviously either have a vested interest in promoting the book, or they just enjoy self-inflicted torture!
